Not according to that Mirror article (who are notoriously sh*te). Still good news if it happens.

    Fan power people.

If we had shut up and not complained about the debacle that took place last summer do you think the club would be concluding business BEFORE the season has even finished ????

I think those of us who steadfastly complained about the beginning of the season deserve a pat on the back, it sent a message to the club that we aint having it ! Also those fans who complained at the AGM too. Had we adopted the Gandhi approach as advocated by some on here, can you imagine where we would be right now !!

    Yes, I do.

<laugh> Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think the club are trying to wrap up deals early because you complained about it at the beginning of the season. That's a Delusions of Grandeur, I would suspect that Wenger's torrid time last summer has swayed his opinion to get the business done early this time. That said, I'm very happy to see him pull his finger out and get on with it instead of waiting until the last minute.

I really don't think that you can take any credit for this whatsoever. I think Wenger realised all along that he had to move quicker this summer.

You'd hope so for that money. It is an awful lot. I've heard rumours ranging from £14m upwards. So Wenger must think he's good if he's willing to brush the moths off of his wallet to that tune...

This kind of post is what message boards were created for. Quality :D

If you didn't take the "Gandhi approach" does that mean you resorted to violent resistence?

He's probably buttering you lot up for when RVP gets sold <run> ;)

Seriously though, would that be a transfer record for you guys? I remember at the time some said that Reyes was about £16-18mill but that turned out to be a fair bit lower, didn't it? The only others I can think of are Nasri, Arshavin and Hleb but they were all £14mill or under, I think.

Never seen him but I'm jealous of you guys for taking the lead in getting transfers done early, I just hope the rumours are true and we're doing the same with Vertonghen.

If we left the club to fans like PISKIE we'd be bottom of the league and not able to sign anyone and even if we could sign anyone, according to PISKIE, transfers take ages <doh>

The fans revolted - we said "we aint having it", the club responded. The chorus of boos rining in Wenger's ears did the trick. Keep thinking that it didn't, its not delusional at all. When was the last time Arsenal did business like this ? Maybe Wenger's first year when he tied up Vieira nice and early.

The Gandhi approach is not causing any waves, its not even causing a ripple, its trying to pacify everyone. Thats the complete opposite approach to what I would advocate - which is all up in people's faces until they hear what we have to say. Malcolm X instead of Martin Luther King. An eye for an eye, aaaaaarrrrrgh !!!! :)

£16m is our transfer record - for Arshavin, who looked like he was worth every penny . . . for about 4 months, then he just gave up and couldn't give a ****. The Reyes deal was an incremental fee based on apps etc. I don't think we ended up paying anywhere near the full fee for him . . . because of the British weather <diva>

Really pleased to see Wenger getting his business done early, I think last summer was a wake up call for him really, the penny pinching and playing hard ball cost us big time - and despite the claim that he's reacting to fans displeasure, I think he and the board realised that they needed to do it differently this time.

As for Vertonghen, I'm not too sure about him, I think we need another CB and someone who is versatile enough to cover LB and DM, but to be honest, I'm not sure that Vert excels in any of those areas. He could be a good squad player, but I'd like to see us go full tilt to get someone like Hummels or Subotic.

It would be yes. He's young, touted highly and doing well in the national squad. Add in the French tax as everyone knows what Wenger loves and there's your price tag!

Still hoping we snaffle Vertonghen and that Vermaelen sways him.

Aaaaargh! How does everybody know and rate these players?! I thought I was a footballing geek and know next to nowt about these guys. Apparently they're the must have CBs. My scouting system must be on the blink.

Ta, I'd always thought Zenit were holding out for about £18mill from us and you ended up getting him for about £10/12mill a few months later.

I'm not really a fan of relying on defenders for versatility, I wouldn't want Vertonghen to be thought of as anything other than a centre back if we got him, only covering other positions in an injury crisis. I've hardly seen any league football around Europe so unless they've played an English team in the CL or EL I probably haven't seen any of those other names play. I'll just be glad to see a couple of decent centre backs come in who can replace our rickety, old ones who can't be relied on.

Edit: Actually I think I remember Subotic from the World Cup. All I can recall is that he was rather massive :D
