The man has just rejected a new deal at Real Madrid. As you can imagine various social media sides are going wild with rumours - primarily for a return to Liverpool, and others mocking this suggestion. I think its unlikely with us having bought Allen, Alonso's wages/age, and the fact he probably feels his work here is done. However you never know, he still clearly holds us in high regard and I reckon we would be first choice in England. Most are stating he would see Adam, Allen and Downing and just laugh. However im sure he also see Lucas, Gerrard and Suarez. Plus when he arrived we also had Biscan, Smicer and Kewell - not exactly the best. What are your opinions and where do you reckon he will go? I reckon he'll stay in Spain and go back to Real Sociedad. He's basque so he may go back to the basque country.
I'd be made up and his name would go straight on the back of my shirt... I'm trying to think of a 'but', how can I though? He is the best in the world at what he does and a return would be epic
I just read the rumour and came straight here... Gosh, would love to have Xabi back... sell Spearing and Adam and Cole... that would open a spot in the squad. Won't happen but would be amazing if true. 30 old? Maybe but his style doesn't require pace... could still be playing at a high level for 4 years.
He's still a top player and I would welcome him back, but like some have already mentioned cost and wages for a player of his age would make it a problem.
As others have said, 30 is not a problem for what xabi is all about. But we have just bought Allen so would be a strange one and yes he would demand high wages. Xabi Alonso though! Would do wonders for a top 4 push
Allen, Henderson and even Lucas could learn something from training with Xabi every week. He knows the style from playing with Spain. Would love him back but it won't happen.
Didn't Rodgers say there'd be one sigining that would get the fans "really excited"? This would get me really excited, but as people have said after the signing of Allen and the fact that the ledge is 30 now, it's not going to happen, unfortunately.
We could still see him arrive... Front three of SG LS FB. Midfield of Allen Lucas and Xabi... Or Xabi,Allen and Gerrard rotate each getting one week off in three in midfield. Despite signing Allen defo still room for Xabi.
I'd love to see Xabi back, but I just can't see it happening... Mind you he's surely too young to head off to the USA or China yet... I guess one factor might be the fact that he's won everything going and truly has nothing to prove, so if he loves Liverpool as much as he's said he might be up for one last challenge. Plus... The LFC websites been dead with no real updates all day; often a sign of a massive announcement brewing, or just that the web team are all on holiday or sat chatting about the Olympics.
I'm certain Gary McAllister had a positive effect on the team when we signed him and he was a few years older than Xabi is currently. Would definitely be some signing if Rodgers managed to pull it off though.
Yeah he did say that, then about a week later I'm pretty sure that AFTER we signed Borini I saw an interview with BR saying that Liverpool fans would get "really excited" about Borini... So I fear it might have been him he was talking about.
Ahhhh, i was wondering if i'd missed something! Although, compared to last year, i am still a little more excited. Borini and Allen for 25 - 27 million compared to Adam, Henderson, Downing for around 40million, lol. I still think there's going to be a least one more coming in, based on keeping Carroll and Agger - Just hope it is exciting and has gone completely under the radar.... RVP? Xabi would be absolutely awesome if he returned, but i can't see FSG sanctioning it - Gary McAllister was signed on a Bosman and was 35, so i reckon a fair bit cheaper every week too.
Yeah I'd tend to agree with you but Bellers has given me fresh hope that some ageing footballers aren't only in it for the money; mind you Craig was always a one off and Xabi agreeing to come to us for free and only on 30k a week is definitely never going to happen!
No, but Alonso is in his prime at the moment so would be worth the wages, would just have to be careful about the length of the contract offered
But then the fee would have to be really low, in order to justify the high wages paid, even if the contract was only 2 years. Don't think he would ask for anything extortionate, but based on his quality he'd still end up in the top 5 for the squad. I reckon FSG would deem it bad value unfortunately.
