Wright-Phillips promised clean slate by QPR boss By Jacob MurtaghAug 3 2012 Add a commentRecommend (1) inShare.0 Share on emailShare on print Shaun Wright-PhillipsMARK Hughes has promised Shaun Wright-Phillips a fresh start as he bids to make his mark at QPR. The pint-sized winger failed to find the net in 34 appearances for Rangers last season, and was restricted to cameos off the bench by the end of the campaign. However, boss Hughes says the former Manchester City star has returned in rejuvenated mood in pre-season, scoring in the 3-0 friendly win at Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night. And the Welshman hopes Wright-Phillips can rediscover the form which persuaded him to sign him during his time in charge at Eastlands. He said: âWe've been really pleased with Shaun right through pre-season. He's been excellent. âHe lacked a little bit of confidence towards the end of the season and it was difficult for him. He was desperate to get on the scoresheet and has scored a couple of goals in pre-season now. âHe looked sharp again and we're really please by what he's producing. âI'm pleased for him because it's like a new start for him in my view. It was stop-start for him last year but now he can really kick on.â Read More http://www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/london-qpr/2012/08/03/82029-31538490/#ixzz22Y8RPNtV
He's looked good so far in pre-season. If there is one player who could improve a mile with a full season under MH, it's SWP. If he can justify his transfer fee this season, that's as good as a new signing.
I have no problem in giving him a clean slate or even a dirty one as long as he doesn't give him any game time. Waste of space.
SWP holds the ball and unstitches defences pretty well. What let him down last year wasn't so much the lack of goals but his failure to release the ball. Seemed to have addressed that against Wycombe where, if anything the lower class opposition might have tempted him to hog it even more. Love to see him have a good season this year. Fingers crossed!
Agreed SWP IS a confidence player. However Surely £60k to £80K a week must mean more effort and application?
We're in a win-win situation here. After last year, it's safe to say that anything we get from him is a bonus. Confidence is an evil master though - quick to lose but so slow to gain. He needs a good start to the season and perhaps a bit of luck. After that we might see some of the player that has played at the top level and internationally.
Agree Ninj. Unfortunately money is no guarantee of quality or form. Strange that highly paid mature players can't work out for themselves that hogging the ball and effectively losing possession reduces confidence all round. Pass and move seems so sensible to us at least.
