Thank G*d hes not our manager any more.Sunday was the worst performance Ive ever seen a England team put out in a competitive match EVER Did Joe Hart give, the ball to his defenders ONCE in the entire game, or was he told "By Woy" to hoof the ball up the pitch at every opportunity ( cos he gives the ball to his defence at every opportunity at Citeh ).If the ball is on to the defence, it should go to the defence EVERY TIME, possesion is king. Did we press the opposition before they got to 35 yds from our goal at all, no wonder we never had the ball, our team didnt try to get it back once we lost it,and as soon as we got it Hart was told by Woy to hoof it back to the Italians again Woy is a managerial dinosaur..England have ZERO chance of qualifying for the world cup with him as manager, it is just a matter of time before the media and the england fans realise how clueless he is
I have to agree, my father in law loved him at West Brom but I really don't get why he is held in such high regard.
he was overheard in training to say something like "when you have the big man upfront, kick it down to him!". Shows how backwards he is, direct hoofball is not a viable way of winning. Possession is the way to win and thank **** he isn't our manager any more
because direct hit and hope footie works for **** teams as it's a viable tactic when you want to get lucky and have no chance of outclassing the other team through possession. Swansea and Blackpool being the rare exceptions.
So true, only a small minority have blamed it on him, the rest think it's the players' fault/tough luck. The players do what they are told and Roy tells them exactly how he likes it, hence Johnson's "it was hard to adapt" quote re hodgson's new England tactics...
He's great at clubs with little expectation or those that don't have to be the best, however the England job seems a bad fit entirely! To be fair though that squad would have gone no further whoever was in charge but yeah the tactics and style of play is slightly embarassing, one of the leading nations in football reduced to just hoping the other team cannot break us down! Worked for Chelsea though!
Its one of the biggest mysteries of the tournament that Roy has got hardly any criticism for the way England played. We were out played by Ukraine surely a team ranked 6 in the world shouldnt be outplayed by a team ranked 52! The most criticism he has got was over the whole Terry/Ferdinand thing which my guess would be he was told by the FA what to do in that respect.
To be fair to him we started off playing it out of defence quite a bit and against a France highly rated pre-tournament. But like France he reverted to type. The one advantage is his method of damping down any expectation appears to have worked on his media chums. Just wait until they revert to type.
How Woy has come out of the Euro's with any credit is just beyond me, it baffles the mind. The squad he picked should always have got out the the group stages, Sweden and Ukraine were hardly teams to fear, claiming that the QF's was more than anybody expected is just idiotic. Woy's tactics were just **** and a whimpering exit was fitting. I hope for a very short future for Woy as England manager, playing like they did at the Euro's England will struggle to qualify for the World Cup. It'll either be another Mclaren or the FA will have to get shut in the middle of qualifying.
it was a reminder of the first season fully under Houllier - two banks of four playing the width of the 18-yard box, only pressing in our own half, humping it long to Heskey to knock down to Owen. Except with England, Woy declined to employ Carroll most of the time, so the long ball kept coming straight back at England. Had he done so, perhaps (just perhaps) Carroll might have been able to feed Welbeck (don't mention Weave Rooney - he shouldn't have been auto first choice!) and we could have seen an England smash'n'grab against Italy...
I've just said this is another thread, but perhaps it's more relevant here. Roy can make poor players look average, and some of them look good. However, he also makes brilliant footballers look average to good. 'Organised' and 'disciplined' is the highest level of team performance Roy can attain, whether it be managing West Brom or England, or, I dare say, Spain. Obviously the natural ability of the players at his disposal have some impact on the performance, but not as much as they should have. If you look at De Bosque, his system is almost a case of saying 'I know you're the best in the world, so go and show me.' Obviously he's a better manager than that, but it's clear that he doesn't restrict his players as much as Roy, who'll play a variant of 4-4-2 no matter who is in his squad. Del Bosque, as all good national coaches do, bases his formations on the players he has, rather than trying to cram them into a dated template.
Oh OP Roy had a month, Roy had a technically inept team compared to the others. Should have at least drew with Ukraine, a bit fortunate with Sweden and dross agianst the dodgy french. I tihnk he did well to get out of the group but England were never going to beat Itlay Spain Germany Portugal, England would not have gotten out of a lot of the other groups. It is time to realise England are currently a 2nd tier european international side. Cannot blame Roy for using a tactic that avoids passing out form the back as posession cannot be retained that becomes a huge issue and you concede, if England had opened up againt Italy after thier energetic forst 25 minutes they'd have been picked off more than they already were. Like Chelsea this tactic of dicipline did in fact not work, as with Barca and Bayern Italy and mainly Bad wasted chance after chance. When you concede playig football and don't actually keep the opposition out it is a total failure of management and the players even if you somehow manage to win by sheer good fortune, it did not happen, why on earth was Young allowed to take a penalty when he has been off for every game? That certainly contributed to Cole's miss. Rooney's inclusion was nothing less than football crime, when the media still pick hte national team you aint gonna win sh!t, Parker and Gerrard When you gotta depend on 30 somethings in sheer hope its not great. Dont get me wrong, they are decent additions but there should have been legs in the middle, how on earth were those old guys gonna pess an italian midfield for 90 minutes, the burst of energy had gone after 30 minutes and that was it for the game.. Now a lot will say Stevie was this or that in the tourney, which is the point, Stevie was not electric or great, he had some decent performances that were nothing to his great liverpool performances and yet he shone above the rest, that says it all. Or compare to Pirlo and other midfielders in this tourney Gerrard is ranked below a lot of oters performance wise, impact wise. When it came to almost top quality opposition it became all too clear what the outcome would be. I did think Johnson actualy did quite well, and am wondering if I should be contant with quite well, probably not
You can question Roy on his tactics, but you can blatantly call him a ****ing idiot for continuing to play Young when the lad was off form, keeping Wellbeck in over Carrol when Carrol was making a better impact and not trying to use Milner in the Centre and playing Theo on the right instead of sticking with Parker. I'm not saying he should have taken Downing, but what is the ****ing point of taking a player if you're not going to use him, even when your first choice was playing ****. I can only assume he still manages because the care home he was booked into was one of those that went bust.
