Serious question, not here for an argument. I am trying to guage how fans of other top 10 teams rate Alex Song. Would you swap Spearing or a fit again Lucas for Song if given the chance ?
Nope, neither. Lucas is arguably our best player, he breaks up play, protects our defence and is the next Brazil captain (those are Dunga's & Mano Menezes' words, not mine) and possibly our next Captain. With regards Spearing, no. You can't buy the passion and fight he has for the club, he also knows his place. Song would come in to the team and would probably spit his dummy out if he wasn't picked regularly. Spearing is happy to be a squad player
Why? Just interested to know why you think that? How much do you know of Song? How much do you know of Spearing and Lucas?
I echo what Bozz has said. Lucas is our most important player and he'll probably never get the plaudits he deserves. The way he battles with physically superior opponents (players like Yaya Toure) and comes out on top is amazing, his passing has also improved over the last few seasons and he's a smart user of the ball and smart of the ball. Song is a better player than Spearing, but what Spearing brings to the team is something Song wouldn't be able to bring, and that's determination and passion. He's had some off games this season but every time he's bounced back and stood up to be counted when the chips are down. That doesn't mean that Song isn't a great player though, which he is.
the best way to keep a harmonious squad is to have aces in places. There is no point having 25 players who all expect to play every game as you can't play 25 players every week (even if you had CL football) - your team would also never gel, I remember Benitez being ripped apart week in week out because of his rotation policy there is no point having 2 DMC's who expect first team football every week as if you play both of them it would upset the balance of the midfield. you may as well have one very decent one and a good deputy who knows his place as deputy. this is why I'd have Spearing instead of Song Is Spearing better than Song? No, But he is a better fit for the team
yeah i agree with the above posters, Lucas is easily one of the most important players on the team, and IMO much better than Song. Song is significantly better than spearing, but probably wouldnt be happy with the same role as Spearing (mainly a backup) who also brings something different to the team
Personally, I would swap Song for Spearing but no way on this earth for a fit Lucas I like Spearing but if Song was prepared to accept a place in the squad Song has more ability but more than Lucas, not for me mate Nice pic btw Bluff-The American Dream
Liverpool and Arsenal fans could argue all day about Song and Lucas, Lucas loves playing for Liverpool and his passion is exemplary and personally I feel he is an invaluable player. Spearing I would swap based on ability.
Every team has a spearing who is needed to fill those voids, keep the squad ticking, and not cause trouble. One of City's problems that everyone can see. Yes you can buy whoever you want but how are you going to play them all? D. Pizzaro is one of the first buys ( I think Viera was one as well actually) that was a cover guy who had talent but knew his role.
Spearing is like our Michael Carrick or Gareth Barry. Not a world beater, not the best available in that position, but they balance the team nicely and don't rock the boat nor will they cry if they get dropped. Song wouldn't be able to play along side Lucas and he is certainly not better than him either - so I wouldn't take him.
I personally have never rated Lucas but I realise Liverpool fans do, especially just before he got injured. I'm arguing elsewhere that Song wouldn't get into any top team in the league and so have posted this on different boards, so far you guys and Newcastle fans have said categorically no to a swap. Chelsea fans would take him over Essien and Mereiles - Not sure I would but .... its opinions I guess.
It's not a reflection on his ability but more because we know he is too good to be back up (which he would be to Lucas). If we didn't have Lucas we'd bite your hand off
No I would not swap either for Song. Lucas is just a better player than Song IMO so thats a no brainer. Spearing is not a better player than Song at the moment but hes one of our own and its great to see them playing for the first team, he will always give everything for the shirt and is getting better all the time.
