Colin Daniel scored the vital Mansfield goal that sent Rovers spiraling down to the Conference on the final day of last season. But the tormentor of Rovers is fast becoming a legend in the City stands. City fans have been enjoying adding to their rivals’ torment since the fatal goal was scored, referring to Daniel as “The Great Man” or simply “Sir Colin”, and this week the antics continued.

Last night, City played Daniel’s new club, Port Vale, and fans from City held banners aloft declaring their love for the player. They even presented Daniel with a magnum of champagne after the game to say thanks for dealing the final blow to their rivals. The card with it read:

“On behalf of supporters of Bristol City Football Club, for your service in liberating the football league of the gas: this magnum is presented. Sir Colin Daniel: we salute you.”

And a pub just down the road from Port Vale’s ground in Stoke named an honorary cider after Daniel for one night only, to keep visiting supporters entertained before the game. Stuart Rogers, from the City Supporters Club and Trust, said the banners and cider were harmless “banter” in the well-documented rivalry between the two Bristol clubs. He said:
“It is good to see that humour is alive and well in football and that friendly rivalry and banter still exists. In that respect I think the flag waving is a healthy thing to be happening. I think this is the lighter side of football. We do often focus on when banter spills over into violence, but I think we should take time to reflect on the side fun of it. It the situation was reversed, personally I am quite good at just shrugging my shoulders when it comes to banter, although I can see how the Rovers fans could struggle to see the funny side. The special cider was put on by a pub in Stoke for some of our boys, and it was all done in good spirits.”

City fans gave Daniel a standing ovation when he emerged onto the pitch, and chanted his name during the game.

One end of the Ashton Gate stadium has been unofficially named the “Colin Daniel stand” with banners draped across it. One local resident of Ashton had taken advantage of the empty, demolished Wedlock Stand and erected a platform that gives him an unrestricted view of the pitch - for free. He has become another City hero, dubbed “Eastend Shedman”. His shed has now been renamed after Colin Daniel.

Well, would any of you GASHEADS have done the same if it was them who got relegated??

PLEASE DONT TURN THIS INTO A BANTER THREAD. IF YOU WANT TO BANTER ABOUT IT STICK THE COMMENT IN THE BANTER THREAD <ok>

No I wouldn't waste my time doing it personally IMO all this banter gets a bit boring and childish after a bit both sets of fans should just concentrate on their own team and stop worrying about what the other one is doing.

I have known Stuart Rogers very well from a little schoolboy to the rather rotund chap he is today, and I think what he has said would have been very tongue in cheek.
Would I support what they have done if it were the other way round? Absolutely not! I have too much pride in Bristol and what has happened to the Gas is a total embarrassment. In a conversation recently which included my red brother-in-law, it was suggested that the 82 incident would have resulted in non-league relegation under present day rulings. He immediately lost his temper.
Get over it guys! Support your own team and try and get some pride back into the Bristol sports scene.

I laughed at first but it's been used to death now.

I mean when the OAP wiz makes over 7 threads to try and rub it in our faces it just gets boring.

ah well what else is he going to do, all he does is sit in his nursing home all day waiting to piss himself. <ok>

Not turning this into a row or anything, but in fairness a lot of you lot call us 82's etc (which many are guilty off) when this could of been the end of City's existence. But that was 32 years ago but it's still mentioned so it's just that banter.
If you let it bother you it will, if you take it with the jest, it won't bother you.

I found it funny if i'm honest. And yes some of our supporters would have done the very same thing and kept going on about it, you're kidding yourselves if you don't think we would.

Just good old fashioned banter and, in truth - i wouldn't want it any other way. And "Shed Man" well i think he's superb and funny as ****. ha Ha

Of course I'd do the same and of course it's funny.

Obviously the decline of our club under Higgs has not been funny, but to the Teds it's been hilarious and if the boot was on the other foot I'd find it hilarious too!

As Rod said, it's just banter both ways and if you take it too seriously, as some do, then you probably shouldn't be on a football forum.

The Teds are milking it, bless 'em but there's a treasure trove of Ted activity that we can use to banter back <laugh>

you wouldnt be a proper fan if you didnt do it. You used the whole windass thing for ages, in fact some of you still talk about it. I remember driving home from our play off defeat and seeing rovers fans on the motorway coming into bristol with banners winding us up.... Colin Daniel sending you out of the football league is pretty much as good as it could get. Losing in a play off final hurt but losing football league status is a lot worse. So of course we'll wind you up about it, expect it for the next 50 odd years.... you'll get bored of it but we never will <laugh><ok>

Must admit I can't see too much offensive about this. Same as anything I'm sure it'll get milked to death, but yes, I'm pretty sure a lot of us would do the same and find it funny for years. The best way to stop it is to get back into League 2 next season, then it'll be old news !

I didnt know I posted this thread!! I pressed 'Post' but straight away I got chucked out of the site due to the site being blocked as google said the site would harm my computer!! I couldnt get back in for the rest of the day. I thought I lost the thread! I didnt get chance to post what Jim Chappell (Chairman of Rovers supporters club) said, which is what I was going to post in the 2nd comment. So I will do it now.

The Post paper who reported this story yesterday, said "But Rovers fans took the events in Stoke less cheerfully". WTF!!!!! Why did they say this? What Rovers fans did they speak to to come to this conclusion?

They then added Jim's comment which was..... "It is what I would expect really, I don’t think any Rovers fans will be very surprised. It is banter but it is a bit unsporting. I don’t find it particularly upsetting. He may have scored the goal on that day but our relegation was down to much more than that. This sort of thing goes on all the time in the sporting world, you’ve got to get used to it.”

The Post is at it again. The other day they made it out that ALL Rovers fans were branded hooligans by a judge but it was just 14 Rovers fans not ALL. And now with this story they are making it sound that ALL Rovers fans are pissed off what City fans have done when in reality that is not the case! All they got is a comment from chairman of the supporters club view which somehow means that ALL Rovers fans think the same. And what was actually wrong with Jim's comment? He said it was just banter. He said he aint upset about it. He its not sporting but this happens all the time in the sporting world and people got to get use to it. He played the whole thing down instead of making a big issue out of it. He even went on to say that relegation was down to much more than Colin Daniels goal showing we deserved to go down due to several issues not just this goal of Daniels.

So why is the Post saying "But Rovers fans took the events in Stoke less cheerfully"??

How can the Post says "Rovers fans" and only put down 1 gasheads thoughts? It shouldnt read "Rovers fans" but should read "a Rovers fan".
Also they got a comment from chairman of the supporters club whose comment was always going to diplomatic and not someone pissing themselves with laughter joining in with the banter, so obviously it would be "less cheerfully" than what the City lot would think about it all. Yet again this paper showing they are a red paper.

Instead of saying "But Rovers fans took the events in Stoke less cheerfully", they could have just quite easily said nothing at all. It wasnt needed. Its just pathetic on their part.

Here is the Post story. See for yourself. Read the bit about Jim's comment and then read it again without that line http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristo...olin-Daniels/story-22937620-detail/story.html

The Post, as with many provincial papers with declining circulations, depends more and more on pay-per-click advertising on their website so they love to stir it up. Just look at the online row the article generated.

Well when Dean Windass stopped the 82er's going up we didn't take it as far as they have.

Having said that some of the stuff has been pretty funny, but it just proves how they are obsessed with us
