According to the not-so-reliable Mirror, our coaching staff are looking at changes to the back four, which would be a back four no longer. It's now a back three, along with wing-backs. I may be mistaken but is this not a system recently used by Wigan? Not saying it will happen but would it work with the players we have? Any thoughts? http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/footb...ring-three-at-the-back-and-wing-backs-1434373
If this is true, Wenger has again been reading Not606 and has taken the Zlatan's suggestions into account.
Let's hope so. I think it would be a good idea, to be fair. A change of system is what we need. Having said that Wenger isn't the type to change his "system".
We have actually used this system this season. We played it against West Ham when we were seeing out the game. Santos and Jeninkson as the wing backs and the three CB's in the middle. So, Wenger has used it this season, but because we only played it in the last 10 minutes, it's hard to judge the system.
It would suit the players we currently have in the squad, and it would make us defensively solid in the middle. We obviously have 3 decent central defenders and 3 very good central midfielders. Cazorla tends to get pulled into a midfield 3 (rather than being an AM) so it would work to make that his proper position. Sagna is more than capable of covering the entire right side. On the left, Santos will have less defensive duty, and as we don't have a proper left-winger, it could work to allow him to fulfil that role. Vermaelen will have more license to get forward in a back 3. The icing on the cake is we can play two forwards out of Pod, Giroud, Walcott, Arsh and Gerv. All of Giroud's hard work would be so much more effective if he had a partner up there. The only problem is against teams that have marauding full-backs overlapping wide-playing wingers. In particular, United would exploit us.
I think it'd be good to give it a try- should improve the counter attack and stop us from having the inevitable situation of passing it around the edge of the box facing a wall of defenders.
Got to admit - I'm a big fan of this system. I think it would suit our players too. I think both Santos and Gibbs are more effective going forward than they are defending, although they still can both defend. Also I think our three man midfield has been too easily bypassed by the opposition and that's where we've been getting exposed recently. With three in the middle and two wingbacks it effectively gives us a five man midfield. Also if we have two up front, it gives us two traditional CFs, they would offer support to each other and be fed centrally through the MF and on the flanks by the wingbacks. Again I think this would suit the players we have got, Giroud, Podolski and Walcott all want to play CF. I think Waclott makes a good RWF, but currently Podolski looks wasted out on the left. Like SJW has mentioned we've used it before anyway and it doesn't have to be exclusive, we can use it when the situation calls for it. Anyway, I think this is the thrust of the mirror article but I haven't read it yet
I'd really like to see what Wenger would do with this formation should this story be true, there's no doubt in my mind that he will implement something extra into it that seems fairly simple after you've discovered it, but would never be able to think of unless you were as intelligent as him. Only downside is that it would probably have to be abandoned straight away should one of the CB's pick up a knock.
