Just thinking through our recent "legends". Just to define what I mean, I'm not talking about the well-liked former servants who we give a good reception to (like Bailey for example) or those on whom we look fondly for their quirkiness (Leaburn, John Robinson etc) but those who for whatever reason be it outstanding record, longevity or devotion to the cause are just remembered for being a bit special. Eddie Firmani take a bow son, but in more recent years the likes of Kiely, Bent and Holland spring to my mind. All subjective of course as one man's legend is another's donkey (I thought Kishishev was great!). I'm leaving out those such as Parker who is undoubtedly special, but rather pissed on his own party by the circumstances of his departure. Of the current crew, and assuming that last season wasn't enough in itself to bestow legend status on every one of them, who do we think will be remembered in years to come as proper Charlton legends? Leaving aside potential dodgy departure circumastances that can't be predicted, I'd say Hamer, Solly and Morrison are nailed on. Wiggins is a distinct possibility and I guess JJ is nearly there already albeit getting found out at this level might begin to count against him the longer it goes on. I begin to struggle after that - BWP is looking like a one season wonder. Kermit needs to prove that he wasn't in the same category (though what a season!!!!) and I'm hopeful he will. Stephens could anchor our midfield for years but equally could be gone in a flash. Pritchard is undoubtedly up there in terms of character and effort but he IMHO is just not there in terms of ability (yet?). Any more for any more? Just to get a debate going.
I suppose you dn't get so many legends nowadays because if player is outstanding he moves on, like Parker who is I'm afraid the best Charlton player I've seen(yeah I did see Simonsen). This is the only thing that could stop Solly from entering the Hall of Fame. Morrison will make it I think, but IMO Pope could stop Hamer from achieving the same. Don't forget Wilson who has won over the fans in a very short space of time and has made the RM position his own, but my favourite midfielder Pritchard will probably revert to being a squad player next season as The Doctor improves the midfield to prepare for a promotion push. By the way there's no way I'd bracket Leaburn and Robbo together- slip of the keyboard maybe?
Leaburn - Cult Hero Kermit - Cult Hero Costa - Cult Hero Solly - Club Legend Powell - Club Legend Kinsella - Club Legend Pavel Abbott - Clubfoot
PEA, how about Deano & DiCanio as Cult Hero Roooooofusssss as a Club Legend I would put Hamer in with Andy Todd as players I will never like!
Good shout on Rufus. I deem him a legend. And agree with PDC and cult status- will never forget that season.
