After seeing a previous post about how utterley awful John Sutton was for us, I had an idea of putting together the worst 'related to quality footballers' XI. Ive got a couple of names I cant think of who, when you look at their surnames, conjure images of genius, but when you look at the first names you end up disappointed. OK heres some I can think of (please add more and ill write it up at the end!). Paul DALGLISH (son of Kenny, played for practically everyone!) Jordi CRUYFF (son of Johan, plays like Jordan) John SUTTON (brother of Chris, legend in his own scottish league - says it all!) Interesting to see if we can put a whole XI together.....
Anton Ferdinand Paul Terry Anthony (?) Gerrard Erwin Koeman Ray Wallace Dean Wilkins Justin Fashanu Adebe Pele George Weah Jr. Simone Inzaghi
on most of these players. I mean as far as I know most did not pretend to be better than they are and some do have as much talent as the players in the division they spend their careers. They had a better opportunity to become professional players because of their family links but I'm sure that you don't remain in a job without convincing coaches and managers that you are able to fulfil what they expect you can. Some have been touted by their agents as better than they actually are, but all players present themselves that way to secure a contract. The one with more talented brothers just get caught in the glare of that media and fandom spotlight. The profession demands strong confidence and just a little bit of arrogance because the nature of the sport is to be better than other player, the other team. Of course we all hate overt arrogance. For example off that list look at Paul Terry. I have heard of him from time to time but generally for what he has done on the pitch. It might have been at lower level than his brother and he may have had ambitions to to be as successful. You would want every player in your team to want that. Yet he found a level and played at it. You hear premiership, international players say in interviews all the time that they have to keep learning, need to continue to impress. It is the same for all professionals. I feel who is at fault for maybe the ridicule these player may get lies with the fans who built up their own expectations they they inferred from the relationship.
You made that up or you are speaking through ignorance. Sutton is regarded as nothing more than a Journeyman in Scotland.
Stupid idea. Most footballers have relatives who play the game and most of those relatives are so bad that they never make it past pub teams. What you are really doing here is taking footballers who were very good (plenty good enough to be pros at least) but making fun of them because they were related to someone better.
Craig Brown last week said "Darren Mackie has something like 55 goals for Aberdeen" 13 years 57 goals. <superstrikermuir>
