I've supported 'the City' for many years and there have been countless less than wonderful away trips for varying reasons but I'd not really thought about which was the worst until now. Some were more uncomfortable than others - stood on the terraces at the old Den in the early 1980s when Millwall invaded the pitch after putting us out of the FA Cup 2-0 and then proceeded to storm our end - was a long night getting home that night. Another 'memorable' one was when our coach to Hereford for an FA Cup tie was turned away by the local bobbies so didn't pick us up after the match! On a more personal note, remember being at a service station in South Wales on the way to Cardiff for a night match (the year we played at - and I think won - against Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham) - was chatting up one of the check-out girls when I caught 'our' coach pulling out from the corner of my eye with my mates (and the odd relative) grinning and waving at my predicament - managed to jump on a Supporters Club coach because one of the old girls recognised me - the official representative was none too keen but she insisted. But perhaps the biggest disappointment was when having travelled back to Leicester to jump on a mini-bus in Humberstone Gate - seats 12 - passengers 22! for a 1980/81 FA Cup replay aginst Exeter on either a Tuesday or Wednesday night - all that bloody way cramped and uncomfotable to stand on a tiny terrace, have my flagpole confiscated, then see the useless bunch of tossers lose 3-1 to collection of lower division misfits and then have that same trip back to Leicester, getting dropped off back in Humberstone gate after the sun had come up the following day - climbed straight on to a coach back to Nothampton where I was a student at the time - knowing I was going to get the p*ss ripped out of me in the student bar later that day. Serves me right for predicting that we were going to win the Cup that year I guess. Well that's mine - how about others?
Peterborough away in League one. Sat (yes, ****ing twat of a steward) next to a bloke who was a bit large bless him and if you've ever sat at Posh you'd know there is no leg room. There was a guy in front who was swearing and screaming at the ref despite having a young son next to him. We lost 2-0. Never got any sort of chant going in our bit (looked like fun in the terraces) Took ages to get there because of traffic in the town. Not to mention knowing a lot of Peterborough fans. Yeah, all in all a ****e day!
Recently the 5-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest, the 1-1 draw at Preston, the one stand out match that had you tearing your hair out, that and the 1-0 defeat at home to Blackpool, Great expectation, new manager, new squad, spent a (little) bit of money, and begun at home to a promoted team, a very small team who in their last match was playing Yeovil. And then lost 1-0.
Not living in Leicester at the time, got a train from Coventry down to Euston, and then the tube to see us at Leyton Orient. League game, late 60s early 70s. The first 2 things that I saw when I got out of the Tube were :- 1) a foot of snow everywhere 2) A news stand saying that the match was off. Pissed off and freezing
Sheff Utd 05/06 season (I think). We lost 3-1, it was the first time I saw City since the lge cup final v TRFC, we played badly. I then went to the LCFC v ITFC game a few days later & that was almost as bad, still we got a 1-1 draw out of it. I do remember going to Sheep away once too, we lost there 3-something.
