Yes, I wonder if England will ever get drawn in the same group as American Samoa in a World Cup? You can just imagine what the result would be!
No they won't. England are in EUFA and I think American Samoa in CONCACAF or something. So you can cease wondering.
Australia beat them 31-0 in 2001. Makes me wonder if I could get into that team. And I presume they compete in the Asian qualifiers? So they'd have to go through teams like Australia, South Korea and Japan to make a World Cup. Seems unlikely.
It's actually my local team, Aldermaston: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ootball-team-scrape-draw-after-40-losses.html
I remember reading this story a while ago, as I recall Samoa had a lot of their first team missing due to passport issues and had to play Australia with a collection of 15-18 year olds, only their goalkeeper wasn't making his debut. Australia also had a reserve team but included a few well known players, having just beaten Tonga 22-0, which was for two days the biggest victory in international football. Unsurprisingly the post match comment largely revolved around the pointlessness of what had occurred, and probably helped lead to Australia being adopted by Asia. So if you think you are better at football than the 16 year old players of a country of 60,000, where football isn't very popular, then yes you could probably have played in that team.
Well done on them getting their first win, must be a great feeling to win for first time after all these years! I think they qualify through Oceania, not Asia. Although if they get to the final round of the Oceania qualifying, then win the group, they would have to play an Asia team in the two legged play off.
Back in the days before live coverage, the only way those at home would know anything about the game was from the written report. The rumours say that, at the time, when the result came through, many people simply dismissed it as a mis-print, assuming the result to have been 1-10.
Sadly, I wouldn't be that confident that England would beat the USA at the moment. We must be a lot closer than country rankings suggest.
I can remember the uproar that this result caused at the time. It was even mentioned in school assembly as a disgrace. I heard the result on the news and the announcer at the time said something like. "I have just been handed the score for England against the USA, no that can't be right. It say's that england lost 1.0!" "I will check that out and confirm it later" "That is all for BBC news update". Then as the music began playing you could hear him in the back ground saying "are you lot trying to get me sacked....didn't someone check this out before giving it to me" Then the whole station went off air for a few minutes nothing no music nothing. Then a announcer came on and said sorry about that we are having technical difficulties!! Brilliant..... Then I remember listening to a repeat of Dick barton special agent.
