This could be a total disaster, but Iâm prepared to give it a go. Iâm going to pick one match a day where all you need to do is predict the final score. The exact score will get you 5 points, 2 points will be awarded for the correct type of result. Iâll not be bothering with goal scorers, but do intend setting a bonus question (1 point) every day which may relate to a different match. I apologise in advance for inevitably having a couple of stickies at the top of the page all the time, but I will try to manage it as best I can. I warn you now that score updates will be sporadic, hopefully after each round of matches. Just to kick things off there are two simple bonus questions to be answered before the first match worth 3 points each. 1) Which country will win the 2014 World Cup 2) Who will be the top goal scorer in the tournament? Argentina and Aguero for me, although I may change to whatever Norway puts!
England to win based on following.................. In 1966 the following events occured, 1. Austria won eurovision song contest. 2.Atletico won La Liga. 3.Real Madrid won european cup (Champions League ). 4.Fulham got relegated. 5.Winners of F.A. Cup came back from 2 nil down. 6. and last but not least England won World Cup. So far this year the first 5 have re-occured, So am going for a 6 timer and going for England to win W.C. again. Top scorer will be Wayne Rooney with a Hat trick in the Final against Germany. Apart from these facts i realise i am probably raving mad (suffering from PLAY-OFF WEMBLEYITIS ).
Ah you're to kind Roller mate Thanks for doing this, should be a welcomed break from all the transfer gossip this summer. Picking a winner is difficult this time imo. No team stands out for me. Spain is ageing, but have a tremendous winning mentality now. Brazil the favourites playing at home, but will they crumble under the pressure? Argentina are as woeful in defense as they are awesome in attack. Germany, will their golden generation finally deliver? Then there is Holland, France, England, Italy and Portugal, will a European side finally win the World Cup when it's held in South America? So picking a winner is like predicting a Harry lineup, total lottery. Surprise package though I can tell you will be Chile. They will send either Spain or Holland packing, good odds to be had on that too. The top scorer is more often than not someone few thought of beforehand. I picked Dzeko because of the fixtures and the fact that Bosnia play good attacking football and will very likely qualify from their group. He should bag a few against Nigeria and Iran imo, and then he's up against that woeful defense of Argentina. I have put my money on it as well, 66/1 at the moment. His strike partner Ibisevic is worth a punt as well at the handsome odds of 125/1. Lethal pairing that.
I'm going to be rubbish at this as I know even less about world football than I do about English football, but at least I've got some pointers now! I'm sure we are all familiar with the stat that no European team has ever won the World Cup on the other side of the Atlantic. I used that to discount Germany and Spain, and have not been impressed by Brazil for many, many years, not that that has ever stopped them winning before. Just how woeful are we talking with regard to Argentina's defence? Are we talking two ageing centre backs with no pace and a left back who doesn't care or something worse?
It's not that their defense is rubbish it is just that they recieve zero protection. They have one holding midfielder (Mascherano) who will have to play out of his skin for them to win the tournament. The other five from midfield and forward is pure luxury, but they are scarily good and will cause teams plenty of trouble. They are second favourites to win it, but they were also one of the favourites in South Africa, so would any team with Messi in it . Before they were annihilated by Germany 4-0, something I'm afraid could happen again if they're up against a tactically well schooled European side. They're as good a bet as the other candidates though, time will tell
