France look good. Likely last 16 v Bosnia/Iran/Nigeria, but then possibly Germany in Q-F - could be interesting.
I'd love to see him play something like this:
Hart (c)
Johnson Cahill Jones Shaw
Wilshere Henderson
Sterling Barkley Rooney
Sturridge
IMO Rooney has actually been better on the left this tournament, he still has licence to roam of course as do all of the 3 behind the no. 9. His assist against Italy came from that position and his goal against Uruguay came when he was roaming out of his central role more after the introduction of Barkley. Waddle summed it up for me on 606 - just because Rooney's (or any other player's) best position is 10 doesn't mean they have to play there if its better for the team that they play elsewhere or not at all. I really don't think Rooney offered anything more against Uruguay in the hole than Sterling did against Italy when he played there.
Rooney and Barkley don't appear to work well in the same team as often Rooney keeps taking the ball off Barkley. You will see Barkley pick up the ball and he likes to commit players and run past 2-3, sometimes naively but that's his game, while Rooney will attempt to take control and they aren't working together. We may aswell leave Rooney out and use Lallana from the left and let Barkley have his moment.
Chile have been playing a certain way for awhile now and these countries grow up playing technical football, same with Mexico or Columbia, even Ecuador kids grow up wanting to pass the ball, while in England kids are coached to be tough and it shows in the type of footballer we produce. The last two England managers to use the right system where Venables and then Hoddle but both managers still fell short and while they had games where it all clicked into place, they still had games where they where made to look ordinary.
Hodgson was the wrong man for the job and I never wanted him as manager but whoever is in charge is going to struggle as even players like Gerrard who has had a fantastic season looks average and the type of football we play in the premier league doesn't translate to the international stage. The best we can hope for is to have a motivator but after we produce a great result, we will revert back to the same problems of having a crap defence and a lack of natural ability to pass and keep the ball.
And as mentioned, even in italia 90 when we had a fantastic amount of talent, we still struggled to pass the ball at times, its just the way this country approaches the game and I can't see how a change in system is going to transform the team. Bobby Robson had Linekar, Gazza & Platt (to name three) to produce when it mattered when the team where struggling. Venables had Gazza, Shearer, Sheringham and a strong defence. Lets not overlook the fact that even when we had talented squads and respected managers, we had top players to deliver, players we no longer have.
It may improve it slightly (by changing manager) but we will still always get found out because the English way is outdated when it comes to the international game.
How is it that Clint Dempsey puts more effort into photobombing than Gerrard did in either WC match?

There does seem to be a need for better youth coaching, just to judge from the quality of the best English players vs. those of other countries. Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard first of all are not at the level of Messi, Neymar, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldo. Also, none of them are very good at key passes, interchanges, and generally working with teammates. Those are not the areas they excel in, except that Gerrard has good touch with long passes. They're all a bit like grown up versions of the bigger stronger kid who is able to beat other kids by themselves. Football is very much a team game, but the aspects of the game requiring close cooperation are those English players don't excel at.
If you're talking British rather than English, you get the partial exception which supports the argument. Bale looks like he may be a top level player, but what are his strengths? He can run faster, and score more often from farther away.
Let's see if the strongest looking team on paper delivers on the pitch v Iran
