Which players with a reputation of being world class have you seen play but have never been impressed by?

For me Frank Lampard is one, good goalscorer but doesn't offer much else to the team and if he's not scoring then he's doing **** all.

Marek Hamsik another one, Lavezzi and Cavani have looked brilliant for Napoli, Hamsik looks distinctly average in comparison to me. Mostly a passenger in games I've seen, yet he's being talked about in a £40m move to Milan not so long ago. Ridiculous IMO.

Any players you've watched a decent bit and never been impressed by even though they get talked highly of by other people?

For me Hulk from Porto. He's rated very highly but whenever I've seen him he's been average. Don't know if anyone agree's mind or if it's just me.

I don't know if he's considered world class, but Sergio Ramos for me, he's decent going forward but isn't a very good defender at all. I really don't get all the fuss about him.

    Ibrahimovic for me.
Didn't Maureen claim he was the best in the world?
    Can't see it myself.

If i'm honest there is a long list of players who inherit the title just because they play at a big club.

start the list at real and barca..

casillas... he's just average, he's a guy the ball bounces off and seems to not fall in the middle of the goal.
Ramos is one for absolutely sure.
Kaka was always one... it was crespo who did the damage to us not him

half of barca are dodgy... iniesta, xavi and messi make the clu band the rest are average.
the biggest one is alves. he's very poor

Rooney is certinly one. he's good but god he's nowhere near what the english press make out he is.

    Ibrahimovic is certinaly one.

Over all i think there are only a few truely world class players out there and most are in spain. I think only sneidjer and maybe maicon in italy.... I think the problem is that most are now so over hyped its ridiculous and unfortunately talent seems to be pooling in a few clubs and not spread out very much any more so you don't get the ultimate out of some guys... higuin is one example

    Agree.

For me, Rooney. Even though he is very good, he often goes through long goal droughts and periods off form. Even to the point where pundits question when he will get it back. A world class keeps at an even level all seasons, every season.

Totally agree. The thing with Rooney is that whilst he's good, a fair few of his goals have been scored via Pens. Whereas Van Persie is completely different as Arsenal get no way near as much pens as UTD ...

Worst - Malouda, the amount people were banging on about him when he first came, gave the ball away every time.

Best - Cantona, made it look easy as ****.

Beckham is another one for me. From open play, he really did not affect much and he was helped massively by having a world class right back behind him who didn't need too much support defensively and constantly created and overlap for him to have enough time on the ball to stop the ball and cross it in. Even then, his crossing ability was massively overrated and was no better than Gerrard's crossing now really. George Best's assessment of him was spot on.

beckham is the most overrated player of all time, the one thing he brings is publicity that highlights to whoever or whatever he does. Its a joke that he is included in team GB in the olympics, a free kick specialist is all he is.......mind you he is not dull making millions like he do. i wish i could be like him...<wah>

We used ot have an upper tier of footballers like Zidane and co, tey looked so far ahead of everyone else.

Everyone else caught up. The gap between an everage player and a good one is not so great as the team game has progressed and you only have to look at the Chelsea and Barca semi, one team far inferior but a team effort albeit with bags of luck got em through when man for man the odds were heavily stacked against them.

When you have world class players that can play as a team too, that's something to behold. There have been few of those, Liverpool, Ajax,, AC Milan, Barca and at times Real Madrid.

Farmer Baz won't like that. It is an interesting take on the Neville-Beckham theory. Usually Neville is the one classified as **** and lucky to have played behind a player as good as Beckham.

You mean Sergio Ramos right? Please say you mean Sergio Ramos!!

Galaxy's right back is probably better than Neville ;)

I think Beckham was a world class player at his peak. His passing ability is incredible, long and short, he knows how to find the right man. You don't see many players cross a ball as good as him either. Don't forget his set pieces either.

    - Wasn't it Sergio Ramos who dropped the trophy off the open top bus before the bus drove over it?

    Beckham was a one-trick pony.

But it was one hell of a trick.
