The other thread got me thinking. How many truly elite players have we had since Jinky?

    McGrain
    Larsson
    Dalglish
    Roy Keane

    Is that it?

Roy Keane was past it when he was with us but had been at that level.

    Can cases be made for;

    McStay
    Moravcik
    Nicholas
    McClair
    Boruc
    Collins
    Ian Wright
    Juninho
    Robbie Keane
    Lambert
    Petrov

I want to push a couple of them higher up and I am sure I have left out a few obvious ones.

Packy Bonner got 80 odd caps for his country and starred at a World Cup , one of my fav celts Chris Sutton was world class , not his fault his country didn't want him .

Di Canio maybe belongs in the second bunch. Chris Sutton should belong at least to the second bunch - if he was in his prime playing today we'd not hold on to him - and he'd be worth about £25m.

Bonner got a hundred caps and was talked about as being amongst the best in the world. I don't really think with too much credence. DiCanio is one in the second bunch too I'd say. One of the ones I clean forgot about.

I loved Sutton but I fear that blinds me to judge properly.

Any idiot that would put. Either of the two Keanes in a list of world stars at
Celtic must been at the Scotch. The Roy man' s admitted pre meditated tackle
against the city player and his loutish, selfish behaviour with Ireland 2002
Should rule him out of any consideration. George Connolly was better than most
If not all listed . Mark Reiper David Hay. Are you serious about Ian Wright ?
I am surprised the bhoy's gay feelings are an impediment to selection.

Players who were at one time possibly world class - not that they were world class while they were at Celtic. I suspect I've just wasted 44 seconds explaining this to you.

Did you time yourself Mick. Thanks very much but if you read my post I made it
Clear that the unacceptable behaviour of Roy Keane meant that he was an unfit
Person to be regarded as world class. Ian Wright was never world class except
maybe M o D eyes. I should also have said that if Robbie Keane was world
Class why was he shifted from one club to another. Clubs everywhere seemed
to be very eager to buy him, but they were also very happy to get rid of him.
My memory going back quite a few years is off him been very well acquainted
the substitute bench. Is that the sign of a world class player.
Could you give me 43 seconds to explain this Mick, I know
You support the robot guy to the end and he needs help.

McStay is the one I really want to bump up. It is hard to know really given the contrast with the average players round and about him.

We have to define world class first.
Top 10 or top 20 in their position or
Top world 11 at their peak. Unless we define world class this becomes a nebulous piece of poor judgement backed by personal favouritism.

My own personal def is top 10 in their position at the time. In the LL we had 3 who would have qualified in 67, jimmy, bobby and tommy. Di Stefano twice tried to bring jimmy and then jimmy and tommy to RM. Nereo Rocco and Rivera said bobby was world class, the latter in 69 said bobby was the best midfield player in Europe and Happel was also very complimentary about him.

Since then, I think Lambert, who marked ZZ out of the EC final was world class at BD in his position. Henrik also, possibly Di Canio. Danny certainly, as he was only 1 of 3 Scottish players to be called world class by Alf Ramsey, the other 2 being Law and jimmy.

As to Sutton etc....... Not in my eyes. Remember we are talking world class, not Celtic class or international class. Packy might be in there, as might Boruc, given their position. Damn few others tho.

    Fair point.

I was thinking along the lines go being amongst the best 2-3 players at their particular role.

I wanted to avoid personal favourites as best I could.

Robot boy quite a few of your original list would never meet the criteria you say you
Are using Robbie Keane , Boric, Nicholas, Collins and Wright for starters of course
the hatchet Roy Keane would also be excluded.
