Wrong loan for him, he's played a total of 146 minutes so far this season and isn't getting a look in under Giggs (make of that what you will). He'd be better off playing with our U23's than sitting around at Sheffield. I like loans but the teams we send them to have to want a player of that type and want to play them. It's early in the season but I get the impression they don't trust him to do a job. Bring him home.
I would agree. there should be a penalty for the club financially for taking and not using... the manager there should be blacklisted on lfc books. however..... the sad fact is the lad has stalled and he'd be getting games if he was better than want sheff Utd have. also tbh.... why should he get a look in for Wales? I might agree on a squad place but who drops.out for a kid who's done nothing for 18.months nearly
It's a tricky one. In all fairness you can't expect a manager to feel obliged to field a loan player if he doesn't think he'll fit. Whether or not it's politics in this case is open to argument. To me, this further calls into question the loan system - something I've always been ambivalent over anyway. Loans can make or break a player's career and I think the parent club should be very cautious about who they send their players to. It should be someone with whom they think they'll get opportunities, but also someone with a congruent training and coaching philosophy, so they are actually developing in the right direction.
He's still young, but he was let out on loan to develop. Trent was kept close and now I would say Curtis Jones won't be let out either, he will be the next to come through
I agree with all of this. Just like to add, maybe loans - or some of them - are player led i.e. the player asks to be loaned because he feels it will develop him further/faster than playing for the Under whatevers. In terms of Woodburn specifically, I think he's a real prospect who needs toughening up with regular play in a first team. He has the skill but needs more confidence.
There is also another element to that jb. Club wants to get rid of players who refuse to go so have to send them on loan to get wages off books. Edit. Or want to put them in shop window.
A very good point, certainly true for the older hands. The youngsters though need the first team experience which some, like Woodburn, are unlikely to get much of with us atm.
Circumstances. Sheffield U have hit real form, sitting top of the Championship. The starting 11 are playing really well and obviously they don't want to change that at the moment. The Championship is a really long hard slog, they've only played 12 out of 46 games, players are going to get injured or drop form and Woodburn will get his chance. If he doesn't either there is something wrong with him or we don't loan to Sheff U again.
but if we have a contract for him to p[lay and he is not then they are cheeky ****s... we can only review in january so see then
I doubt there is any politics to this. Giggs is a professional and for whatever reason doesn't want to use him. He's not going to hurt his own team just to get at a team who isn't his rival anymore. I agree it is regrettable, and if we can bring him back early we should.
Look at current Wales squad Wayne Hennessey (Crystal Palace), Danny Ward (Leicester City), Adam Davies (Barnsley). Ashley Williams (Stoke City, on loan from Everton), James Chester (Aston Villa), Ben Davies (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Gunter (Reading), Connor Roberts (Swansea City), Christopher Mepham (Brentford), Jazz Richards (Cardiff City), Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea), Paul Dummett (Newcastle United), Declan John (Swansea City). Joe Allen (Stoke City), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Andy King (Leicester City), David Brooks (Bournemouth), Matthew Smith (FC Twente, on loan from Manchester City). Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Ben Woodburn (Sheffield United, on loan from Liverpool), Harry Wilson (Derby County, on loan from Liverpool), Tom Lawrence (Derby County), Sam Vokes (Burnley), George Thomas (Scunthorpe United, on loan from Leicester City), Tyler Roberts (Leeds United). Woodbur n is supposedly in squad though I've not checked tbh. Look at who Wales have to pick for first 11. Bale i think was out. Wilson hot a game, Sam vokes played. It was quite a defensive system with Ramsey up higher and 3 at back which in effects 5-3-2 formation. Gigg s subbed on Brooks and Smith, who I know piss all about. And Lawrence too. So clearly woodbur was about the only forward not thrown on . But he was there. Again should look at woodbur and ask what did he do to attract highs attention to put him in. Imo he can't be doing it in training.
This is why Rafa was a strong advocate of having B teams in the football league. Whilst only the big clubs could probably afford this and it would somewhat devalue the football league, the development for young players at these clubs would be immense.
how does 10 approx b teams with about 10k fans min devalue the football league? The football league esp lower leagues is crying out for investment and more money.
the danger of that jimmy would be that the prem could end up being a list of all the big clubs and their b teams and everyone else no chance of competing as all the money would go to the same clubs to reinvest in the first and 2nd teams. that's what the super league would probably end up like one day anyway. take the soul out the game for ££££££££££
b teams are not allowed to be promoted. there are clear rules about this in Spain. frankly I think we all need to take a bit closer look at what happens. these b teams are at best mid table champ level and often go down to league 1. the reality is players cycle through those.b teams out to other clubs still and those club with 18 and 19 year olds will always struggle especially against men in English league action. if anything it would accelerate the development of players who lower league clubs can then pick up as they get to the end of their b team.life... get 5-10 22 year olds out of lfc who are hardened leagie players but just won't make it at lfc. clubs would love that. look at Conor coady at wolves. I'm made up for him.that finally after years and years he's made a break through to play in prem. he did that off the back of sheff Utd.loan and hard work.
"b teams are not allowed to be promoted. there are clear rules about this in Spain." is that a spanish rule or a eufa rule though? you know as well as i do our fa make the rules up to suit themselves as and when it pleases them.
