Never know what to make of promotions like that. Can't say whether he's been specifically groomed for the job or not, suppose we'll see if it's a good appointment in time. No way to tell beforehand.

Clearly he wasn't groomed as not their first choice. Lost count of how many managers have rejected them! That said he could turn out to be the man for the job.

That's not to say they hadn't been preparing him in some way - though he's been there four years so I suppose if they had been grooming him, they'd not have picked him as such a last resort.

Well, we know what has happened in the past when we've promoted from within. We've had Stuart Gray and Steve Wigley. Stuart did OK to poor. He saw out our time at The Dell, and he brought on Le Tiss with 20 mins to go against Arsenal. I'll forgive him for practically anything else he did for doing so. Steve Wigley was like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

The thing is, I don't really blame either of the two caretaker bosses, because they did what they could, though they were completely out of their depth and should have said so. I blame the club for being cheap and small minded. We were an established Premier League club, reasonably safe from the perils of relegation [by then] and Lowe, Askham and Co gambled on the future. Unforgivable..!

    Wolves are desperate.

On the other hand, that takes us up to a whole THREE black managers in the football league, so good luck to him.

Desperation is the key word here. But you never know it may work out, but few caretaker managers go on to be successful.

I wonder if Wolves fans would prefer to have McCarthy back now...

Yeah, I wonder if Wolves' top brass regret their decision now? Ridiculous move. Who would want to blot their record when the odds are stacked well against them with a few months of football left. Any manager worth their salt knows that the pace of managerial merry-go-round means that there'll be better options available soon - potentially all the way to the top! They should have just bit the bullet and offered it to Dowie.

Hope the new chap does well, though - for various reasons, but mainly the black and English manager ratio.

Wolves is a team that has somehow never made it to my list of 'disliked for some reason I have forgotten' teams, so good luck to him.

Wolves are going down. Proved to be a stupid stupid decision to sack McCarthy. You need someone with experience to get Wolves out of trouble.

Yes, I agree with you, the most suitable candidate should get the job. A quarter of players are black, and virtually all managers are former players, so if it was purely based on suitability basic statistics suggest there would be more than three black managers among the 92 league clubs.

    That's why it matters.
