    10th August 2013
    3PM- Molineux

This is the Second Match Day Thread of Gillingham’s Sky Bet League One 2013-2014 Season. This is the place to post all of your Team Predictions as well as Chat before and during the match. This thread can also be used to post Updates on the match. You can also post your Views on the match after the game and discuss the performance with others. I may write my own report if I have been to the game and I will give my overall opinion on the result and what I thought of the individual performances of each player.

    Team News
Gillingham will be without Matt Fish who has serious damage to his ACL which means that he will be out for a long period of time expected to be between 6-12 months. Charlie Allen may also still be missing due to an infected foot. Other than them 2 Gillingham could have a fully fit squad.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have a number of players who could miss out with George Elokobi, Richard Stearman and Dave Edwards all expected to miss out.
As well as these; Bakary Sako, Sam Ricketts and Bjorn Sigurdarson could also be doubts as they missed the last game against Morecambe however Wolverhampton Wanderers have a large squad so they should be able to cope with all these missing out.

    Past meetings
Gillingham have a mixed record against Wolverhampton Wanderers with 5 wins, 3 draws and 6 defeats in the 14 meetings with Wolves.
The last time that we played them was in 2005 which was at Molineux and we drew that game 2-2 we also won the home game that season. However other than that we didn't really have a good record against Wolverhampton Wanderers as we lost the 3 meetings before that without scoring a single goal so this game will be tough which we all know.

    02 Mar 2002 Wolverhampton Wanderers v Gillingham L 2-0 League Division 1
    29 Oct 2002 Gillingham v Wolverhampton Wanderers L 0-4 League Division 1
    22 Mar 2003 Wolverhampton Wanderers v Gillingham L 6-0 League Division 1
    30 Oct 2004 Gillingham v Wolverhampton Wanderers W 1-0 League Championship
    19 Feb 2005 Wolverhampton Wanderers v Gillingham D 2-2 League Champ

I think another draw would be a great result however this is a big ask but with Wolverhampton not having the best start then maybe we could steal a point or maybe more.

    The Current league table
As of 09.08.13 Gillingham sit 20th in League One after 1 game with no points however Wolverhampton Wanderers sit 17th in the league table with 1 point after 1 game.

    My View
This is possibly one of the hardest or even the hardest game of the season so it is good to get it over and done with no rather than later in my opinion, I am usually optimistic however I think that this will be so hard that I would be thrilled if we got a point. I can see us losing however I do believe that if we go there and work hard we may catch Wolverhampton Wanderers out and get a 1-1 draw.

    The Score and Scorers
I am not sure if this will be the score as I am thinking it may 2-0 or 3-0 to Wolves however I am going to keep the faith and say that it will be 1-1
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Gillingham (Sako- Kedwell)

I am hoping that we will change the team however I am not sure exactly what team I would pick, it does seem that we need another midfielder due to lack of numbers so this is the team that I would pick.

    Nelson

    Harriman
    Legge
    Barrett
    Martin

    Linganzi

    Whelpdale
    Dack
    Weston

    Kedwell
    McDonald (German)

I am not sure who to pick, I am not sure if German should play ahead of McDonald as he was really sharp. I expect McDonald will be sharp soon but German was exciting on Tuesday and I think I would play him. Also I would play Dack in attacking midfield and Linganzi in holding midfield. Gregory was not great on Tuesday but I still do think that he is a good player but I think that it may be good to just play Linganzi in this match.
I think that Gregory has come into this season nervous like he was when he arrived which is not good as this means he takes a lot of time on the ball and then he makes mistakes. He has not been hitting them long passes which he was last season towards the end of the season and I think this is due to nerves so I think it will be best that he is on the bench during this match and Linganzi plays.
Hopefully Dack can play like he did on Tuesday as he was brilliant.

Also like to say it is such a shame that Fish is out for a long time as that breaks up that brilliant back 5, I really rate them and it is a shame that we won't see all of them together this season.

Lee on right wing ??? Why does MA insist on playing people out of position when there is a suitable player available.

Not surprised at this result as I did predict a heavy defeat .. I am not going to panic just yet but could be getting concerned if we don't pick up points next week.

Anyway could be a long and testing season but to early to be certain I guess. I always had the view that survival was as much as we could hope for but would love to be proven wrong

the gills are really going to struggle by the looks of it this season....Did you strengthen and did the manager do his homework as the standard is a lot higher than what you are use too last season.....Its going to be a long hard season if your manager cant get his players to up their standard a lot as there are better teams than wolves in the championship this season...good luck..

Heavy defeat but of course to a team who were in the premiership a couple of seasons ago, have huge crowds, massive parachute payments, and international players. League 1 is a big step up from league two and the team and manager will take a few weeks to adjust to the level we need to be at. As fans we must have some patience, support the boys and see where we are after 15 games before we press the panic button, to stay up this year should be the target, cmon U Gills!

Wolves were a class above today, playing the ball slickly across the turf, while we opt for the usual L2 style of hoof ball. It's going to be a long hard season unless MA dispenses with route one football. Nelson was outstanding again and how often can you say that of a keeper that conceded four goals in a game. The scoreline could have been much, much worse and MadDog has a week to sort it. If Martin Allen does not play the players and style that suit Cody, then its back to the drawing board I'm afraid. What worries me is that the tactical issues were evident against Colchester but for whatever reason the manager has failed to act on it.

I'm not upset with the players today and I also accept that days like today are part and parcel of being a travelling Gills fan, however, all I do ask is stop being so stubborn and if you can't change tactics then why is the one player that suits the tactics you choose to play, sitting on the bench, while Cody is left alone drifting in no mans land?

The BBC stats gave Gills 13 'shots' !!!! with 3 'on target' - really ? - did they include two woeful headers that my deceased grandmother could have stopped ? The stats shows Wolves had 24 shots - it seemed like 42. In truth Wolves eased up in the second half - and Gills were still not good enough. It's not so much that I mind us losing - but the real lack of decent effort was embarrassing. But for Nelson the score could have been double figures ( before half time )
I will be at Swindon and will go to Crawley -but THIS camel will seriously reconsider a better use of my time on 'away' days if this is the level of committment (& 'correct' tactics), that is on offer.

At the risk of being called negative (bed wetter) I would like the answer to a couple of questions.

    1. if players are picked on their showing in friendlies/training, why was the top scorer from pre-season (who scored again yesterday) shipped out.

    2. If the best (most productive) strike force in the last ten years is Cody and Bayo, why won't MA ever play them together.

    3. After pre-season and 3 games, league 2 tactics are proven to be ineffective against higher class opposition, does MA play the system from choice or lack of quality.
