Hi Boys, To be honest you didn`t miss much a very dull uninspiring game with very few chances. Hayes started up front with Toson popo, popo ran around alot and enthusiastic Hayes looked like a poor Paul Benson though is lacking game time. Sullivan was solid in goal with little to do,Doc Mambo Francis and Anderson played 90 mins and all did ok Francis looked decent. Davison worked hard as did Prichard Stephens looked anything but a first xi player and I can see him getting stick from the fans nice touch at times but quite anonymous. Wagstaff played 90 and did what waggy does ran alot went down a few blind alleys did a couple of decent balls dived a few times. High spot of the game was the appearance of Jason Euell who in his 15mins on the pitch looked head and shoulders above anyone else. Harriott came on looked dangerous . I think we had one ot two trialists put in an appearance well at least one doubt he`ll play again. If this were the starting 11 I`d be very worried for the season but it wont be and in all honesty doubt any will start the 1st game barring maybe sullivan...and Euell. Davison definately has a bright future a little terrior . All in all a poor match though the Francis haters wouldnt of been happy as he was maybe our best player.
Thanks for the info MikeT- sounds like we didn't miss much at all. I'm guessing we all think Euell will get offered a contract if Benno goes (which seems to be the case). The one triallist that really interests me is Anderson, do those that have seen him think he will get a contract?
Thanks for the report Mike - the Twitter feed was less than useful on the details of the game, but commented several times on how good Francis was, particularly his crossing - could be someone's had a wake up call...
Agree with that re Francis is he better worse than solly I dont think so.Anderson seemed ok had one surgeing run then wasted it but do we need another left back we have Evina ,Wiggins do we need 3 no 3`s..as it were. The biggest disapointment was Hayes to me but first nearly full match for 8 months so spose have to cut him slack. 500 or so charlton fans who were there definately seemed to want Euell signed up...he seemed the fans fav even before he came on.
Thanks Mike! You've worried me now though - my end-of-season doom mongering is still fresh, and a brand new squad isn't instantly going to change my scepticism over Powell Guilty til proven innocent with the new squad for me I'm afraid
Heard complete opposite re Stephens- told by a few people he looked class. Not rushed in possession, good through balls and positioning excellent etc
Don't know about you, Mike but IMO, Euell would go through this Division like a dose of Salts, even at 34. He's just come out of the Prem - yes, I know he didn't play much - but he's still as fit as a butcher's dog and I think there's a strong element of 'unfinished business' with this club in him. Even on a non-contract basis, he must be worth a punt.
All oppinions but for me stephens was very average I hope i`m wrong but this was woking and he looked very average ,did one or two decent balls yes....BUT well we shall see. Agree on jason Euell even at 34 and his experience could be invaluable. Didnt notice any of the woking players barring the keeper who seemed decent. Elvis Hammonmd ex leicester played up front for them but mambo Doc were untroubled.
If Hayes is a poor man's Paul Benson then we really are in trouble - because Benson is poop! The doom mongering is way too early. If friendlies are any indication of the season ahead then Liverpool are going to be useless - they lost 3-0 to Hull.
I'm sorry Mikey but I completely disagree re Stephens. He is always looking for the ball and always wants to do something positive with it, he has a lackadaisical style (a little like Le Tissier) but he was dictating the game today and is far better than Semedo and Racon. I was hugely impressed. As for the others, Hayes struggled and seemed unwilling to get stuck in (he also runs in exactly the same style as Benson, it must be something to do with Dagenham ). Not too impressed with Andersen. Waggy is SO frustrating, failed to put in a single decent cross. Francis looked OK. Euell looked a cut above when he came on, I really think signing him would be a great idea.
So we beg to differ captain black ,well on stephens anyway.Funnily enough looking at oldham boards half their fans were gutted he left half were glad to see the back of him. Agree re Euell though Anderson had one good forward run but apart from that didnt contribute much.
Cheers for the reports lads⦠The differing opinions are one of the things that make the beautiful game soâ¦er⦠beautiful and why this forum is so entertaining to be a part of. I fear that with last seasonâs shambles still fresh in everyoneâs memory weâre all a little on edge about what this coming season should bring. Hence why we are all analysing so deeply the performances of our new look squad, all in the hope weâll see even the slightest glimmer of what could prove to be the beginning of a major change in our fortunes. At this early juncture Iâm not particularly looking for world beating performances, just for signs of understanding and team spirit amongst the squad. Is this evidentâ¦? With the high turnover of players for me itâs all about getting them to understand one anotherâs games and the system the gaffer wants to implement so that it all comes together nicely as one big unit come the off on the 6th August against Bournemouth. The comments you boys have made relating to Euell have really intrigued me though. I must confess that I wasnât a massive fan of his the first time round. However, I can see the logic in bringing him back. He is without doubt a fit 34 and having played his football above League One level for pretty much his whole career, I feel he could bring some much needed experience into what is in the main a young inexperienced squad. He can also offer us something different in terms of attacking options as heâs a different type forward to the three weâve already got. Added to the fact heâs a big and bubbly character whoâs very close to Powell⦠Iâm really struggling to see any reason why we shouldnât welcome him back with open arms⦠Keep the faith ladsâ¦
Agree with the thanks for the report, it is always interesting to see how we all see the same game and player performance differently. There have been very few areas of consensus pre season and Euell is turning into one of these where people are agreed that he can do a job for us at this level. Other players of whom I have not heard much criticism are Mambo and Bover. Any others that stand out from the match reports as having had a consistently good pre season?
This is a pretty good report - certainly better written than the one on the O/S. http://www.wokingfc.co.uk/first-team/match/88/ Can't find anything on the net about our triallist yesterday - anyone know where he's playing at the moment?
It does seem that our 'fringe' or younger players have caught the eye more than some of our bigger signings. This is just an observation based on match reports and info from other fans. It would appear that Bover, Mambo, Davisson and Pritchard have performed consistently well. This may be due to us (understandably) expecting a lot of the likes of Hates, Stephens, Taylor and Morrison and them not quite fully settled yet. When you look at other pre season results it shows that the result is secondary to fitness and the squad gelling. Lots of teams have been defeated by lower league opposition in the last few weeks but it will have little or no bearing on the rest of the season. Getting my tickets for Den Bosch and Den Scum tomorrow...looking forward to both games.
I cant go to the Den Bosh or millwall so my next game is the big kick off appreciate you boys giving me a lowdown on next to performances. I reckon Stephens will be MOM and second coming of Glenn Hoddle
