16s ago @MailOnlineSport: BREAKING: Dennis Wise wins claim for return of £500,000 from former Charlton co-owner Tony Jimenez at High Court.

Oh dear, this does not look good for us. Still, Jiminez can do no wrong in some peoples eyes.

They need'nt have bothered.....Whilst I appreciate the dispute itself may have nothing directly to do with Charlton, surely having to pay such a significant sum will have some sort of effect on the club.

Dennis Wise has won a claim for return of £500,000 from Charlton co-owner Tony Jimenez at the High Court.

Wise, who played for Wimbledon, Chelsea and Millwall, said he gave 'former close friend' Tony Jimenez £500,000 to invest in a golf course in France.

He claimed that the 'agreed purpose' was not fulfilled and said he was entitled to have the money back. Jimenez disputed Wise's claim and said the money was invested in the golf course development in Les Bordes as agreed.

But Judge Penelope Reed QC today ruled in Wise's favour after a High Court hearing in London, and ordered Jimenez to pay compensation.

Jimenez and Wise used to work together at Newcastle - when the latter was director of football and Jimenez a vice president.

Penelope Reed QC, sitting as Deputy Judge, said on Friday: 'I consider that Mr Jimenez received the sum of £500,000 from Mr Wise for a specific purpose and he has not satisfied me on a balance of probabilities that he has fulfilled that purpose.

'In those circumstances he held that £500,000 on trust for Mr Wise. As he no longer holds those monies he is liable to pay equitable compensation to Mr Wise in the sum of £500,000 together with interest from December 4 2007.'

Wise said afterwards: ‘I would like to thank the judge for her decision and my legal team for all their hard work.

‘This award simply confirms the truth which I told in court namely that I gave Tony £500,000 because I trusted him and believed he was investing it for me.

‘It is very sad that I have had to sue him to get my money back. ‘It is particularly upsetting that Tony, who was a very close friend to me and my family, has accused me of lying just to avoid paying what he owed.'

Jimenez however, plans to appeal the verdict. He said: 'I'm extremely disappointed with the judgement handed down today and given the evidence find it difficult to comprehend how the judge came to such a conclusion.

'Disappointment and bewilderment is heightened given that the judge has branded certain of Mr Wise's behaviour as 'reprehensible'. I'm consulting with my legal team and my intention is to appeal the decision.'

Wise was awarded costs likely to total £230,000, while the court refused Jimenez, who was absent, permission to appeal and also denied him extra time to pay the ex-footballer his money back.

The result is that, within 14 days, Jimenez will need to pay Wise £500,000 plus £81,000 interest and £100,000 in costs. The remainder of the costs will be paid at a later date, subject to him seeking an alternative means of appeal.

Judge Reed analysed evidence from both men following a hearing which started in June. She said Wise, 46, had been subjected to long ‘sometimes aggressive’ questioning but had come across as a ‘truthful witness'. She said she had treated Mr Jimenez's evidence with ‘extreme caution.’

‘I consider that Mr Jimenez received the sum of £500,000 from Mr Wise for a specific purpose and he has not satisfied me on the balance of probabilities that he has fulfilled that purpose,’ said the judge.

‘He is liable to pay equitable compensation to Mr Wise in the sum of £500,000 together with interest.’

Had he sold off his 50%+, I think it'd been announced. I guess it was a slack bit of journalism.
