Bristol City's winners and losers so far this season: Marlon Pack, Josh Brownhill and others
Our City writer's take on who is hot and who is not so far this campaign...

With a quarter of the season gone the Robins are reasonably placed after what was always going to be a tough start to their 2018-19 season.

Having sold their best players in the summer Bristol City are looking to rebuild, gel together new players and a new back five and stay in contention for the upper echelons of the league.

It's been a good start for plenty of players and the stats predict that City should be set to climb higher in the league.

Here's who our City writer charts as having had a very good start to the season and who hasn't.

    Winners so far

    Josh Brownhill

The 22-year-old central midfielder has been Bristol City's most consistent player so far this season with two goals and two assists to his name in the league.

That's along with a string of energetic performances including a brilliant display at QPR to help City to their first win of the season.

His good form has ensured that Korey Smith has not been missed too much.

    Marlon Pack
The on-field captain is our most improved player of this season so far - just nudging ahead of Niclas Eliasson.

Although not at his best in the last two outings against Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham, Pack has brought his natural dressing room influence - he is the man to choose the tunes in the Robins dressing room - onto the pitch and has stepped up his on-field directing this season after the head coach looked for the team to show more leadership qualities last season.

When Pack's passing is on point, then City find a good rhythm and more likely play well.

    Niclas Eliasson
The Swedish winger started the season in blistering form, setting up the first goal of the league season for Andreas Weimann.

Alas, in recent matches the attacker's form has drifted south as the seasons have changed and the weather cooled.

At the same time the Robins have not done as well results-wise. Under real pressure to keep his first-team place.

    Niki Maenpaa

Pretty flawless first quarter of the season from Maenpaa, who to this writer's mind may only see the second goal against Bolton as being one that could have been saved.

Part of a new back five with a decent amount of clean sheets so far (4 in 12 Championship games) but now faces competition from Frank Fielding.

    Tyreeq Bakinson
Enjoying a fine loan at Newport County with the Exiles under manager Mike Flynn.

It probably helps that the 20-year-old has fellow Robins Cameron Pring and Antoine Semenyo alongside him.

    Losers so far

    Jamie Paterson

The attacking midfielder is in our opinion arguably the most naturally talented player in the Bristol City squad.

Memories are short but when Paterson played behind Bobby Reid against Manchester United and Manchester City, the Robins played possibly their best football last season.

And despite a slow start, Paterson played decent roles against Bolton and Nottingham Forest as the Robins did not lose. Given his prior record he needs more game time than the paltry five starts he's had so far this campaign.

    Liam Walsh
The midfielder is on the periphery of the squad and has been given few minutes of first-team action.

Started against Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup but hasn't received a single minute of play-time in the Championship.

The head coach admitted that ideally Walsh would have gone on loan this season and that may still be the case in February.

    Korey Smith
Midfield maestro Smith has been most unfortunate with injury this campaign at a time when he looked to be recapturing his best form.

After starting the season out of the team the former Norwich City man was pressing to start, spurred on by Brownhill and Pack also playing well in the middle.

Alas, it'll be a fair while yet before Smith is able to contest a place.

Has Pring actually played for Newport yet? ...seems to be an ever present sub and not used!

evil post journalism is a lot to be desired, I have in the past noted that certain topics on here a few days/week or so later become the substance of an article ….
everything is relative .. income is low so wages reflect this … the lower the wage often the less the quality of the result ……..

Paterson i an understand, hasn't had a decent game for us since 2017. Not sure whats going on with him but he's been pretty much awful every time he plays. However the writer needs to give his head a wobble regarding smith and walsh. Stupid players to put in seeing as neither have actually played.

and walsh has played cup games, what i meant was none have played enough to be branded a "loser" of the season. If that's all that is needed to fit the criteria then Hegeler and Wright need to be front of the queue.
