Any one going to bother upgrading to Windows 10? Or any tips to say if it is worth doing? Personally I preferred anything pre windows 8.
XP was best for me, but had to get a new laptop so got 8. I run it with 'Classic Shell' front end, so it looks like XP. Now upgraded to 8.1
A Microsoft logo appeared on my laptop taskbar the other day and when I clicked on it a page came up for you to register an interest in a Windows 10 automatic upgrade. All it needs is your e-mail address then click send I believe it starts rolling out on July 19th and will be a 3GB download but as already stated updates will be a continous feed after that no more 'patch Tuesdays' as it was called and the 'free' offer will contine for 1 year, after that seems a bit of a mystery to me at the moment. And yes I registered an interest as yet my Win 7 desktop or Win 8.1 notebook haven't had this logo yet so I'm not sure if it is a device by device offer or one e-mail to cover all your eligible devices.
I must be the only person in the World who didn't have a problem with Windows 8. Everyone seemed to hate it.
I've got Windows 8, I was going to set it to basic so it was basically the same as XP, but I decided to stick with it. I don't really like it though, I just click on desktop as soon as I open it and don't really use any of the other functions.
Swapped my laptop for a Macbook when Windows 7 came out and never looked back. Seriously dont know when I didnt switch earlier.
My wife has used Mac for years, swears by them. However she's noticed recently, say in the last couple of years, Apple becoming much more aggressive in their marketing. You know, this is no longer compatible with that, you must upgrade, etc. Also they seem to be promoting more 3rd party software than before. What's your experience? I wondered if the departure of Steve Jobs had heralded the arrival of less 'user-friendly' management.
For once we agree Madge. I got Windows 8.1 simply because I got a new PC but I had my local 'geek' set it up similar to Windows XP (by far the best in my experience). I wouldn't rate 8 as good as XP (just my opinion) but have got used to it now. My Geek tells me that Windows 10 is pretty good and he can install it for me whenever I like (in exchange for money of course) but I'll wait for the reports to come in on the "Whirlpool" site ( a site which is a MUST for anyone who needs help on anything - please try it).
I must admit I like to click on something and it opens.... not all this buggering about with stuff opening and popping up from the side when ya didn't want it to it does my trolley in. Worse thing with 8 and 8.1 was the start button or lack of it. So I like others got it to think it was windows 7 and got the start button back. I suppose for the younger generation all this new gubbins is OK though.
Like Madge and I said (although Madge didn't employ it) you can adjust Windows 8 to operate like XP (which I did) so I have no cause to use the horrible 'start' button system just click on my browser (FireFox) and i'm away.
I only really have a couple of gripes; 1) Chassis are enclosed meaning you dont have the option of upgrading existing kit, you have to buy another device if you want something faster 2) The amount of free software is limited - I could pretty much find a free tool for whatever I needed on Windows, whereas most Mac software (3rd party or otherwise) is licensed. I havent noticed any hard hitting marketing, but Apple are sure as hell trying to pull the bottom out of the used market, meaning more profit for them!
I like to think I'm pretty good with all things related to computers (except for printers, **** printers) and I can't stand Windows 8. Finding settings and things that were previously easy on xp/vista/7 has been made much harder. I find the app sytem to be completely unsuited to normal laptops and desktops, great for touchscreen but that's not what I want. All I want is the standard windows desktop on startup, without the ****ty tiles screen popping up at every opportunity. I've installed themes ad skins that make it more like that before but they generally caused processing issues. As far as I'm concerned almost anything from Microsoft would be an upgrade on Win 8 so I'm looking forward to 10. I'm 19 btw so it's not just the older generation who dislike it.
Using windows 7 here and it works great , tried 8 or 8.1 and didn't like it at all , seemed like a step backwards I think I'll wait and see on the reviews for windows 10 but quite happy with 7 really
Just got a new laptop after the old one died and had to get Microsoft to help install office which I had bought previously. Anyway, the tech guy told me windows 10 would be offered as a free upgrade once released. Don't know if this is for everyone, just new laptop purchasers or office buyers.
I bought my laptop late last year and it flashed up yesterday to reserve windows 10, I just followed the instructions and when it is released you either install it or not free.
XP has been great for me over the last few years, but had to upgrade my main desk comp to win 7 after some software I bought was not compatible with XP. I do use Win 8.1 on one of my laptops and don't have a problem with it really, although I only use it to run Virtual DJ, and on my 2nd laptop I still have XP on which is ok for my Karaoke software. Don't think I will need to be upgrading to Win 10.
True enough about the lack of free software on Apple's, though there are lots of excellent free utilities. As for the inability to upgrade, a good model should keep you on top of things for at least 5 years. My current model is a 3-year old Pro with an fast i7 chip, 16BG of Ram, and a 768GB SSD so can handle anything I ask of it and should continue to be effective for at least another couple of years. Also, Mac's have a much better resale value than PC's.
