Hello all Not like me to start something like this but been ploughing through this and several other forums and there seem to be increasing numbers of posters who go to extremes in their posts, especially relating to the trouble this weekend. I think it was Kipling who said : "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same" It might be my age but I think that supporters of most teams have experienced more disaster than triumph ( although to be fair following Watford since the 70's it's probably touch and go ?? ). My point, yes I am getting to it !!, is that I wish those posting from a position of superiority would do so with a little less vitriol and just a little bit more grace, I'd hope they'd find any responding comments were posted in a similar vein. I stand prepared to be shot down ! Ethel
Considering where Watford were in the mid 70s, (Div. 4 for our younger viewers), with a ramshackle ground (complete with greyhounds), few players of genuine ability and a chairman/owner parsimonious in the extreme (Bonser out anyone?), I would say that our subsequent experiences weigh heavily on the triumph scale! We are now 2 divisions higher, have reached 4 cup semi-finals and one final:6 promotions including 2 Championships, 2 play-off finals, a modern (albeit 3-sided currently) ground, secure ownership and a squad of players (loan doubters notwithstanding), that is probably the best we have had in 30 years. Not too many disasters in that time. Or do I have rose-tinted glasses?
your glasses are just fine vic. Even from when I started in the early 60s we were a third tier outfit that had never even tasted higher divisions. Now we are a "natural" second tier club that experiences better from time to time. Excellent. Ethel - I don't think anyone will shoot you down - you have it spot on. People should know how to win with grace as well as experience defeat graciously. Luckily the vast majority of our fans do seem to be genuine well meaning people and I have seen lots of goodwill towards our opponents - stoppping just short of wnating any to beat us
To be fair you're right but May 19th 1984 is still a painful memory and tips the scale disproportionally on the disaster side !!
agree ethel, tho gotta say your player / fans celebrations at the end of the game here at Hull City were a little over the top, just wonder if that somehow affected your lads mind-set & hence your blip in the next games. Almost thought you'd got promotion! Our chaps knuckled down & won the next two...

My first season following the 'blues' we had to apply for re-election to the football league. Anything since has to be up. I have not noticed anyone having certainty about where we will finish in the league this season, although hope was increased after the win at Hull. I believe that success comes and goes for most teams over the years, Wolves being an example. One of the top clubs in the country at one time, now trying to avoid relegation.
BTT, unfortunately time and finances restrict away trips these days so wasn't there but I think you could be right that we thought the job was done. As for players celebrations I don't think any of them cover themselves in glory, I must admit one of my pet hates is watching the end of big games where players run past opponents to celebrate with their own. Do you think we'll ever see anything like Freddie Flintoff and Brett Lee at the end of that really tight test a couple of years ago, on a football pitch ?
Although it may not feel like it come the 4th of May, but even if we lost the last 4 games and finished 7th, I would not consider this season a disaster considering where we could have been this season if the Pozzo family had not taken over. We have had a fantastic season and way beyond many fan's wildest dreams! Who would have thought a year ago that this season we would have a footballing legend like Zola managing our 'little' club, playing the football we are playing? Don't get me wrong, I am still optimistic this season. Firsly that Hull slip up enough for us to nick second, but if not, another play-off final win. But if this does not happen THIS season, we will be installed as one of the favourites for next, with another season's experience and hopefully not too much of a first-team personnel change! It is not a disaster if we don't go up (especially compared to some teams). We are in stronger position both on and off the pitch than we have been for a very long time. The future is very bright...
Very Well put Salisbury, i have a feeling an awful lot of Watford fans who have their eyes open would agree with you totally
If you need reminding about our season this might help. http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sp...ecord_set__another_could_be_equalled_tonight/
It's been a great season - of course promotion would be the icing on the cake but unlike Cardiff and Hull we were relegation favourites 8 months ago
