Mike Williamson says he cannot wait to get back in the Newcastle line-up after missing over three months of action through injury.

The 28-year-old defender has had to watch his side's brilliant start to the season from the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury in the Carling Cup in August.

He is still a little way off a return to full fitness but could be fast-tracked into the side after injuries to centre-backs Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini.

Williamson is not expected to make it back for the visit to Norwich on Saturday but hopes to be involved in the clash against Swansea one week later.

"I can't wait to be back. I'm looking forward to the buzz of playing again," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"It's great that the lads have been doing so well this season and as a player you just want to be out there and join them.

"The aim is to be back out there as quickly as possible and playing again in front of our great supporters."

With Taylor potentially out for the rest of the season with an Achilles injury and Coloccini suffering from a thigh problem, the Magpies are down to the bare bones in the centre of defence.

James Perch is likely to come into the starting line-up at Carrow Road, while inexperienced Hungarian Tamas Kadar may be forced to fill in alongside him.
