Although I would say we have had a much better season than some recent ones.......in the fact we can actually score goals as well as concede them, we are still having a quite unpredictable season, which some might till argue has always been part of the allure to being a pompey supporter....... So, all said and done, two questions? 1/ do you think we can make the play offs? 2/ do you actually feel we are ready for promotion and want it? (for me there would be nothing worse than a yoyo season.......other than dropping out the FL) Cheers, BP
I think we will be in the playoffs. But our past history in playoffs would suggest that we will be in League Two again next season. If we do go up, I think the pulling power of the club will attract players of the calibre that we will need to strengthen. There's not a lot of difference between the average League One side and the top third of teams in League Two, so I think we could comfortably finish mid table in League One next season if we were to go up. It's a much bigger step into the Championship though, as I'm sure Burton will find out next year!
I reckon we can make the play-offs, as long as we continue playing like we did on Saturday, with a positive attitude and a purpose. There will be a few more "Shaun Derry type teams" coming down to FP before the seasons end with their high balls and match wrecking performances, I'm sure ! Reckon if we do get promoted, we can be successful in Division One
You are getting a lot of "big club syndrome" games where teams look at your history and set themselves up not to lose. Not to win but just not to lose and I think that explains the number of draws you have had. I said elsewhere that you have the squad and calibre of player to do better than you have and I think you will definately do the playoffs. You also have a better than average chance of winning the play offs if you get to the Wembley bit. I think teams raise their game against you but underperforming has also played a part. If you go up, and that isn't a given by any means, I think that you are not going to do the yoyo bit. You are well equiped as a club finance wise and player wise to do exactly the same in league one as in league two. Other teams will see you as a big club and one to beat or take points off at least. That's irrespective of the fact you went up not down. I think you would do the same in that league with a gradual climb from no worse than midtable until you got it right again and the Championship beckoned. Staying there or progressing from there is a whole different ball game. Competing with clubs with less than 5000 in gates is a whole lot easier than the Championship sides most of whom have a comparable history at worst or a better one than yourselves..
A good rationale Greeny!! Looking at the Plymouth catchment area, you yourselves should be a fair to good Championship team as well.
Your goal difference should stand you in good stead if it comes to that and if you rid yourself of leaking last minute goals there's no reason you wont be in the mix. You should feel ready for promotion every season and your current league position would hopefully have you champing at the bit -
I think we'll scrape the play-offs - my heart and head say we may even make the final - however I'm not confident we'll win it - are we ready for League 1 - yes - in lots of respects were ready for the Championship but getting there is the rub. We have a good manager despite some of the moaning I see on the Snooze website and I still think if someone had said play-offs at the start of the season we'd have said yes please. We lack a nasty side and I fear it is that which will be our undoing in Lge 2. I will add I'm not a fan of that sort of football but it seems in Lge 2 you have to have it.
Just checked the table and didn't realise you had dropped 11 points behind the automat spots I need to stop putting you in my accies I think All joking aside though, what's happened? I thought you'd be certainties for top 3 this year with Cook, you could still go up through play offs of course but where has it gone wrong?
I said play-offs when Cook took the job and I think you'll make them. I also said that it's a long term project and Cook will take you up and establish you in L1 within 3 years. Then, I suspect that you will need another manager to kick you on to the next level and probably a bit more investment.
Draws draws draws - 14 of em' and only Leeds & QPR can match us and look where they sit in the Champ. So frustrating!!
I'd be interested to see what the league table would look like if all the games finished after 88mins, 80 mins and so on. I wish there was a site where one could look at this sort of thing. Come on You lot there must be some-one out there who can create a web site for those of us with nothing better to do in our spare time
