Our record signing, Jimmy Bullard, didn't exactly go as planned (for whatever reason, that's not the point of the thread), but was it the last big signing we'll make? Can you see us spending ã5m on one player again? Thoughts?
I prefer to find bargains (Chester,Stewart, etc). Regarding the question, probably, when the time is right and we actually can afford it. But no rush
Jay Jay Okocha was the biggest signing we ever made, shame he was crocked as much as the ginger waster, but he gave a lot more back to the club than Bullard. No doubt we will make more 'big signings' if and when we get back up to the Prem but I'd settle for Febbo's idea of getting young players and developing them, despite this not pleasing the plastics and others wanting instant success.
I can see us making a big signing in the future, and not necessarily with a big price tag. I agree with Febbos, we may as well wait till we have the financial muscle to pay such fees. From how things have developed the club was paying transfer fees beyond their means in the premier league, and after having their fingers burnt once the club won't want to go there again.
It's not like he said we should sign a player for ã5m right now. TWF seriously needs a clean slate. Every word is always twisted. Actual Statement: Will we sign another player for ã5m at any point in the future? Inferred Statement: We should sign a ã5m now, now, NOW! Give the guy a break.
I hope that Cam Stewart makes a full recovery as I feel has has the potential to be worth ã5m in the future..

When you say 'will me make a big signing', do you mean money-wise or big-name-player-wise? Yes to both, anyway. Just not for a long time.
Thing is though, I don't think I've been any different recently... people are just coming round. Big fanfare, probably with big money.
It'd require a couple of years of premier league stability for them to give that kinda of money away, unless it was a crazy good signing for the money( like how spurs signed van der vaart, too good for them and cheap for him)# adam pearson wouldnt like it though
Koren was a big signing last year. No fee, but he signed on the back of a decent world cup campaign with Slovenia. Half the ****e we signed in the prem were not worth the money we paid. I don't think we will imminently spend ã5m on a player. But next time we get to the prem, then we might do. There is though plenty of decent players available for free........
How come nobody seems to grab the concept of these deals? It's not how much you pay another club it's more a matter of how much the contract is worth over 2,3, or 4 years. To put it simply Ipswich could get Jimmy Bullard for free if they want to fork out 4 million in wages over the next two seasons, is that a bargain? It's not transfer fees that kill a clubs finances it's the high contracts offered. Three million quid for a player I'm sure city could afford but we can't afford to have 15 players making more than 20 k a week. Simple maths really, I suppose the answer to the original question would be for me,"I bloody hope not" I would'nt want Micheal Owen prancing round Hull on 80k a week if we were given him free. Lets try and build with youth and sell any outstanding players for loads of money and let some other billionaire idiot in the prem give them silly money
Will we ever make a big signing again? Nah! Not in the immediate future anyway. I am far from convinced that we will make a challenge for EPL status in the near future either and that is what 'big signings' are all about. Prospective players that have been targetted by us for signing during the close season are not setting my expectations on fire either. We are spending little or nothing (so far). A 'free' goalkeeper from Germany and some 'replacement' defenders and midfielders but absolutely nothing up front (so far) so my prediction for mid-table consolidation stands at the moment. I don't think we will go near this seasons great away record next season but hope that we can improve on this seasons abysmal home record next season. Should see us in the top half, hopefully, but without 'big signings' I doubt we will do any better.

It depends on how you look at signings to come up with the "Big Signing" banner 1) Is it the players name, i.e., J.R.Bullard, that make it a big signing, or; 2)The transfer fee,i.e., ã5+ million,or; 3)The weekly wage the player is on, i.e., ã40+k over the length of the contract that makes it "The Big Signing". Or is it a combination of any of the three of them? Or, on the other hand, is it a player that you get for little over-all cost to the club, that whilst performing his duties on the pitch aids his team-mates and his club to their target, i.e., promotion, and through that improves his/their sell-on value? But to answer your question, I do think as a club we will pay ã5+ million for a player, but not for at least 3 years. The reason for "at least 3 years"? Is, by then I hope we will be back in the PL, and some of the players, the management are bringing in now, may need to be replaced, but, I expect a reasonable fee, along with add-ons, for the players we would be getting rid of, so, the fees paid would actually be lower than the head-lines That the "rags" would quote!
The "Who is a big name signing" is similar to the "Big team" arguement, The club down the M62 could be called a big club if you look at history, as Marradona would be a big name signing (both useless now though). Will we sign a ã5m player? - Not now, when in the Premiership possibly For me if we sign anyone for over ã2m at the moment would qualify as a big signing for the club. I am happy with the current strategy, pay low fees for hungry, talented players who want to win. Several clubs in the premiership manage in similar ways, Stoke, Birmingham, Bolton for example dont pay huge ammounts in transfer fees (compared to there rivals anyway) and have sucsess relative to the size of the club
