That folks will remember and talk about in the future? A strange question i know. But looking back at some as the old names that still get mentioned from time to time. The likes of Shacks, Hurley, Clough and then Porterfield. Usually mentioned by the elder states people of the board. But as times move on, even these famous names will be nothing more than a name in a book or a plaque on a wall or a staue at the ground. Recent decades has not blessed SAFC with to much good fortune and household names have become more and more scarce. Since the cup win 42 years ago how many can you think of in say 15/20 years will be remembered? Some who were young at the time may say Rowell. Im not convinced, as he will probably be long forgotten by most. Maybe even SKP will be just a memory and a brief mention. So i guess until a repeat of something like 73. Many names will just be a small part in the history of SAFC. Maybe SKP will be the last real hero at the club. Many clubs are in the same situation.
The short answer to your question is they'll all be forgotten. The 1891-5 team was a team so brilliant they blew the minds of football "experts", a team four years in the Football League and had already won it three times! And I look down that team sheet today, and not one of their names even rings a bell! The longest lasting is undoubtedly Charles Buchan (1908-25) a player who was even considered "awesome" by fellow internationals and title winners, a man who won a Military Medal on the Somme, taught local kids at Cowan Terrace school, and mixed with local people from his sports shop in Blandford Street - "Charlie" earned his place in local history. We're essentially lumbered with three names - Buchan, Raich Carter, and Len Shackleton. The rest - Hurley, Rowell, Gabbiadini. Phillips - nah. They were good players, sure. But that's not the point. Shack was the laziest swine I ever saw He could be infuriating! I could spit blood over that bone-idle **************************! And then there was that moment when 50,000 jaws just dropped open. And there's nothing more to discuss. How the hell did he do that? That's the difference. That's something you never forget. That's a proper legend.
Good post mate. But as not everyone is about 800 years old, some folks who dont read the history books on safc wont have a clue what you are on about. The average 20/30 year old would only have seen SKP. So unless they have a vested interest in the old days ( which you know i have) the chances are the may have only have heard those names in a fleeting conversation. If at all. Like you said everyone will be forgotten, but in the near future only SKP is thought of. Maybe 20 years time he will also be erased from most folks memory.
Er ... cough, cough ... only 800? Yeah, point taken - Phillips is probably the highlight of that generation. After that? - Bent and Gyan if they'd stayed long enough, but they didn't. M'Vila has it in him, but we'll see. So yes, I agree, Phillips is probably the last.
Yes. I find it hard to relate to many of the players now (obviously not on a personal level). Many come and go, pick up that hefty wage packet and leave again. Darren Bent could have been held in the same regard as SKP had he stayed with us - but he didn't and look how that turned out for him.
Julio will be remembered as he is possibly our greatest ever foreign player that coupled with his respectable spell with Boro and sure to become legendary time with Willow Pond and Shields will ensure this. Oh aye and finishing a Newcastle players career, I forget the name I don't think he had a birth certificate....
SKP and by default, his strike partner Quinn. Of the current crop, not one of them. Possibly Watmore, but I'm not sure he has the star quality to be a top player. hope he proves me wrong. M'Villa won't stay long enough. The rest don't have the required combo of aptitude and attitude.
Kieron Richardson for that free kick against our cousins from up the road. I said to the bairn, 'watch son, this ****ers gannin in' & bam, tack that yer mag twats. It's one of those moments that I will remember until I get Alzheimers.
I was right behind that goal and thought the free kick was to close to get up n over the wall. When he launched that exocet missile i thought it was gonna burst the net and hit me in the face. Took a few seconds to register it had actually gone in.
Or the other way round, Kev was never as prolific without Quinn. Quinn was a clever player, misunderstood as a lump to hump the ball at when in reality he had very neat touch and great awareness. Good with his feet and with his head. He had the sort of intelligence natural finishers love around them. Kev would never had scored as many playing most of his games with Dichio.
I don't see how one can be remembered without the other, they were a dynamite strike force that will go down in history as one of our finest.
But who needs record books when you can remember? Thought that was the point of the thread. Remembering? If somebody can remember Super Kev but doesn't remember Quinn you'd have to question their interest in the club. Kev's name will be the stand out in the record books once they're forgotten while Quinn won't feature much, but if you remember one you must remember the other.
Im not denying that. Lets rewind. Clough. I do believe has the highest goals game ratio in our history.. who supplied him? Someone earlier said Arca is our best foriegn player. Really? Its just what we as individuals remember. Its a lighthearted thread and very subjective. I was just trying to think of footy threads rather than ot ones. (Even though i prefer the latter) Shall we do several game threads. End up like the mags board? You know yourself. New ideas aint easy. Get ya matchday thread on.
I don't know, I don't even remember Clough so why would I remember who supplied him? I wasn't even born. You're asking who would be remembered, not who's name will pop up in the record books. Reading print doesn't equate to remembering something. I know Monty Played over 600 games, I don't remember it. If somebody can remember Kev but doesn't remember Quinn they're a ****ing dumb arse. No problem with the thread fella, I just think we've got a different definition of the word remember. Match thread should be up tonight. On doing it now but I'm on and off busy today.
