He’s away - he’s given us two excellent seasons where he’s got everything out of the team he possible could. But there are two things: 1) He wants to win things. He’ll never do that here as winning doesn’t fit Mike’s business model 2) He’s on such a shoestring that he’s one run of bad luck away from ruining all the good reputation he’s built up. If he wants one last go at a trophy before he retires, better for him to go now, reputation intact. I’d love to be wrong. He’s the best thing that’s happened to this club in a very long time. And I love the guy. But I won’t blame him if he goes.
Sadly I’m going to say go; Rafa will not get the guarantees that he needs. The other scenario is that he stays but early into the season Ashley does not deliver on ‘promises’ in which case Rafa walks.
Stay. Big caveat though would be for how long. Can see Ashley making promises to keep Rafa such as “spend every penny” etc and then trying to weasel his way out of them by low offers or not offering appropriate wages and losing the”line” again.
I think he'll go because I can't believe that Ashley will hand over funds to properly strengthen. That every last penny comment saw Ashley simply claw back millions of the money he says he's owed, and let Rafa have the pennies that were left. Rafa won't fall for that one again - he'll want clear policy in black and white. I can see Ashley accepting that, so it'll be another roll of the dice for the round one.
So I did. See your point now - still think he won’t stick around long in a team not trying to win anything though. Maybe he’ll give us another season out of sentiment, but it would be a gamble on his part.
Think he will stay but my main concern is Ashley likes to try and tie down long deals and if I were Rafa I would not commit past a season maybe two and see how it goes. If the money and ambition is there you can always sign a longer contract later once you are happy but he'd be mad to sign up for another 3/4/5 years with out some concrete assurances that the club will progress. It's only really down to Ashley to be honest. Rafa wants to stay but, like any team, needs to see they are striving to be better than the year before.
