Apparently the current manager is trying to develop continental-style football. Remove the hoofball attitude. Remvoe the idea that the ball is a hot potato. Saw them on the box a couple of times - look very good the way they are playing out from the back but their attack is as bad as ever -just one-dimensional: run down the wing and lob it in to the box and hope for something to happen. Looks awful. Have lost to the mighty Luxembourg in their current campaign, drawn with Azerbaijan. Anyway, its a work in progress which is interesting in that the idea is to eventually try and eliminate lower leagues style football and inculcate mentally a confidence to play the ball intelligently on the ground and make shooting chances from inside the box. It may not happen as the manager may get the boot before being given the time to have his methods bedded. Still, it is good to see a team of hoofers and all heart being told to change their ways. Some of their former players don't get it. Want the manager sacked and return to wallop, smash, kick, hoof and lob it into the box. Personally, I would prefer to see any team (England, Scotland, Faroes, Brasil, whoever) being sunk during a transition period and come out better on the other side than returning to "tried and trusted" methods. In the case of Ireland, tried and trusted = caveman football. That is what makes this one interesting to watch and see how it progresses.
