Overtake SKP in godlike status, by the end of his SAFC career?

He is half man half machine.

Joint 10th highest ever Prem scorer.

Will he be remembered and talked about in the same way SKP is?

Don't know if anyone will ever surpass SKP, the man is a legend and premier players just don't get 40 goals a season anymore. But, he's already a legend in his own right for what he did last season and he's proving that given the service he will get goals this season.

That was a sublime pass by Rodwell as well mind and a great cool finish from Defoe. Long may it continue and to think he was a swap for 'Couldn'thitabarndoor' ****ing class.

Love Defoe and for sure doubted when he came here, but SKP is a an all time legend in my opinion for us Sunderland fans. A travesty that he didn't get the England chances or a major team in England. He could have been a legend elsewhere as well.

SKP is probably regarded as our best ever striker. Well he certainly is by me.

I love Defoe, but he's no SKP ;)

I think we have definitely found his best position, though. He looks so more comfortable upfront, than he does at right back <doh>

    Defoe
    Well he is good
    However
    Skp
Was undoubtedly the best I've seen at Sunderland
As has been said he never got the full England recognition he decerved

SKP benefited being alongside NQ and was more lethal in combination with him. Find a partner for Defoe and he will find more freedom.

I think Defoe is as good as Phillips but won't come close to his legendary status, he'll be remembered as a very good striker though. Maybe if we'd got him five years ago.

Defoe's had a much better career but for a season or two KP blows him out of the water.

Super Kev wins hands down for me.

Still the only ever Englishman to have won the European Golden Boot.

Defoe came here ready made in the back end of the career. With Kev there was a massive element of having to put faith in an unknown. With him arriving in his late 20s with no reputation. And then the goals, oh the goals. Deofe won't surpass Kev in legendary status, but he doesn't have to. He just has to be Defoe and enjoy his footy

Depends on whether Defoe stays. Bent earned that sort of status (especially considering the team he played in and the team Phillips played in), But look at Bent's reputation here now! It's up to Jermain.

Well if we're going pre-Premier League, check out Dave Halliday's record. That's the one that kills all arguments. But I don't think they're fair comparisons.
