So your chairman has given you control over a £10m budget for playing and management staff for your Championship club, and you are expected to get the club promoted. You are a well renowned manager, commanding a salary of at least £500,000. You need 2 outfield coaches plus one goalkeeper coach - £500,000 Then your playing squad consists of the first team squad, which includes all players who are on any professional contract So, with £9m left, how do you build your main squad? ⢠Goalkeepers â 2 needed (can always emergency loan) ⢠Defenders â 8 needed, 2 for each position ⢠Midfielders â 10 needed, different types ⢠Attackers â 4 needed, different types Thatâs 24 permanent playing staff, plus the youth players who have been given contracts. Letâs assume the youth player contracts average £20k each per year and there are 15 of them - £300k. Those 24 players, sharing the £8.7m would leave nothing for loan players, so you need a contingency of, say, some £1.5m for loans of good players, leaving £7.2m. Across the 24 players, that provides an average wage of £300,000 per year, or £5,750 per week. Given the rumours of Aidy White being offered £10k per week by Norwich, an average salary of half that seems reasonable for Championship. However, as we see week in week out, some players are âworth moreâ as are some managers. So the more higher class players you have at higher salaries, the other players need to be on much less wages, to balance the books. This is where Bates and Harvey shafted Grayson. In the press they may have said that the budget was Graysonâs, but he was never given control over the wage bill. Bates and Harvey kyboshed the good players from coming, and we were left with having to buy many mediocre players in an attempt to find a number of gems. When they did not arrive, the season could only be saved through loans, which failed too. Will Neil Warnock be given the full free rein? I canât see it. Bates will not allow a manager who is only here for one year to commit the club to long term high wage contracts. This just all feels like public relations bluster that will end in tears as Warnock storms off around November. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
How positive you feeling now, Josh? You feel positive about next year? You feel positive at all with Bates in charge?
