Ok, it's been done a few times i know, and the interview is with a numbskull, but does he have a point? As the season progresses, is he a liability, not just as a player, (cos i like him as that) but as captain.. There will be calls for O'Shea, but is there anyone else? Iain Dowie believes Steve Bruce should consider stripping Lee Cattermole of the Sunderland captaincy. The Soccer Saturday expert said the midfielder was guilty of some "ridiculous" tackling during Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Brom and was fortunate not to be sent off by referee Lee Mason. Cattermole was cautioned for a foul on Peter Odemwingie in the first half and was substituted on 70 minutes, shortly after a late challenge on Steven Reid. And Dowie believes Bruce and his assistant Eric Black now need to punish the player for his reckless approach. "Cattermole got booked for a challenge in the first half by Lee Mason and quite rightly so," he explained. "It was on the touchline and he was inches away from getting the ball, but it was a very heavy challenge and a yellow card. "Then he got away with the most ridiculous of challenges and didn't get a booking, so Steve Bruce immediately signalled to Jack Colback to get his gear off because he was coming on. "They took him off and Lee Cattermole had the audacity to question Eric Black about the decision. You saw Eric Black almost saying: 'What are you talking about? You're lucky not to be sent off and you could have cost us the game'. "I'm a great admirer of Lee Cattermole, but there were two challenges he could have been sent off for. "The one where he didn't even get a word from the referee was a blatant second yellow card and he was lucky not to go. "It's something that Steve Bruce has got to address. He still is the captain and I wonder whether this might be the final straw for him in terms of the captaincy." Point The game started badly for the home team as James Morrison and Shane Long put West Brom 2-0 ahead inside the first five minutes. But goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Ahmed Elmohamady meant Sunderland were level before half-time and Dowie believes Bruce will have mixed emotions after the match. "It's a great point for Steve Bruce," he added. "But before the match you'd have thought he probably wanted more than a point out of the game." .
Definitely agree. I said after the newcastle game he showed he just doesn't have the maturity to be captain yet, and he proved it yet again at the weekend. At this moment in time he is nowhere near captain material imo, it should go to one of the ex United boys (and no I don't mean richo )
It was a poor judgement call to make Clatterhard the skipper and perhaps even a worse call to buy him in the first place. The best aspect of his game is his tackling but he is so oftn reckless he will get yellow or red carded and that negates this positive aspect of his play, He is slow, cannot hit a long pass (he has trouble with short ones sometimes) and does not look like he will ever score. A positive is Meyler may be back soon and he may well turn out to be just as hard a tackler as Clatters but without the yellows etc. and is bigger faster and stronger player (a sort of Fellini at Everton if you like) then Catts I am afraid can be discarded.
Said all along that Catts shouldn't have been made Captain as for who I'd give it to, Brown he will play more games than O'Shea all season. Strip Catts of the armband and he'll go back to being the player we bought and not the lunatic card magnet he is now.
I would say first half against Newcastle was one of the best he has played in a long time, however in the second half it was classic Cattermole. If only he had a few goals in him then he would be a quality player but he offeres nothing to our team when we are in possession of the football. Cattermole - Good without the ball but useless with it.
