Great result tonight for Wigan, i agree with Fergie that their position is false.

But did anyone else notice the pathetic attendance they got? 25000 seat stadium, and they only filled 18000 to see Man Utd at home.... Shocking! We got 7000 odd more that regularly in league 1.... Even with probably higher paying sponsors, their turnover must be pretty low.

Surely we must get the turnonver and have the money available to stand us in good stead for survival in the premier league if we got 28000+ attendances regularly and with richer owners, especially with clubs like Wigan looking good for survival

Credit has to be given to Wigan and to Martinez, he continues to work wonders at that club. And in what way are Wigan a joke club AdamBanana20?

From the centre of Wigan it's 30 minutes or so to Anfield (to south west) and 30 minutes or so to Old Trafford (to south east). Give them a break, it's understandable that a ton of glory hunters will go there instead. It takes me over half an hour to get to St Mary's ffs, a lot of glory hunters will go to watch Liverpool or Utd instead for only a 30 minute drive. They are very close to Bolton and Blackburn's about half an hour away as well. They also aren't as well off up there either a lot more unemployment. Wigan also have a Rugby League club that's 2nd in the Super league, Rugby League is very big up North. Considering all the factors 18000 is actually a very decent attendance. Cut them some slack.

    Very stupid post.

So are Huddersfield and Leeds. Your arguement is slowly but very surely losing its gravitas.

Idiot. If they're a 'joke club' then how are they where they are? Albeit fighting relegation but taking good points from the likes of Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool in the PREMIER LEAGUE isn't something that i'd consider 'joke club-esque.'

I think their style of play is admirable and they continue to get the most out of their players despite not spending as much as those they are competing with.

QPR, Blackburn, Wolves squads all cost more than Wigan's I would guess.

    I like Martinez also.

"Joke club" is disrespectful. They have been above us in the league table for a few years by virtue of having a better team who perform in a higher division.

Their match day tickets and season tickets are ridiculously cheap, (cheaper than almost every championship team). So I don´t understand why football fans in and around the area, even if they aren´t wigan fans, wouldn´t want to go and watch Wigan v Man U or Cheslea or Liverpool or City ...etc...

    Wow.

    Not sure how this works!

They may not be the best supported but they have earned their right to get their and have earned their right to stay their.

If they stay up, they've earned it, simply as that.

Or as you also pointed out, they are a Rugby League club. But have you looked at the population of Wigan lately..? 82,000+ So I consider that to be not too bad for them to get 18,000 through the gates, when you consider that they have to share the enthusiasm for spectator sports with Rugby League.

By comparison, Southampton has a population of about 240,000 and pulls in a maximum of 32,500+ [OK, 32,689]

Y'see, that joke club isn't doing so bad after all. In fact, they're doing bloody well.

Wigan are far from a joke club , you could argue their position had been bought years ago by Whelan as a labour of love like Jack Walker but their fans are brilliant , they compete with League and also Liverpool , United , City , Everton , Blackburn for support , for a small town they do well .

Yes, the club operates above their station. It can be annoying for many fans in lower leagues to see a club which cannot seem to grow in the fertile environment of the PL, and fill half it's relatively small stadium. Where as Hull and more recently Blackpool have managed to grow as clubs from what were only brief PL stays.

Still the team and management cannot be faulted

Wife's family are season ticket holders there and despite me having some banter about small crowds and only singing one song, the retort is always the same: a gentle reminder that the last time I took father in law to a game it was to watch Tranmere beat Saints in league One.

Remember they replaced us in the Prem.

I sobadly want them to stay up so we can play them

Terrific result for Wigan...hope they can use it to save themselves, but unfortunately sometimes life isn't like that. It may be their last hurrah. If they were full for the ManU match, there are a few on here who would point out their 'plastic fans'. They are in a rugby area with competition from other clubs. The fact that we are a well supported club is why we were worth investing in. A day to congratulate Wigan not to question their support. I'm sure they have passionate fans, the same as us.

They are extremely close to manachester, so it must be very hard to attract fans since Man City and Man Utd are close. I really like them. They have assured Roberto of his job.

Congratulations to Wigan on a great result - this is what football is all about, the times when the small guys get one over on the big boys and they dont come any bigger than Man Utd. Remember our epic results against Man Utd, Liverpool etc when we were in Wigan's position in the top tier of English Football. 6-3 and Fergie going bananas about their shirt colour etc !

No Wigan are def not a joke club - they are what we can relate to, Saints supporters who can remember fighting against the odds mostly in the lower half of the league for 27 seasons.
Martinez is proving to be a top manager and a top man and their owner is a proper football man - used to be a player in fact.
If we get promoted i look forward to going to Wigan, if they are still there and i hope they are, every bit as much as going to OT etc.
