Sad for Wigan but hopefully this will be the starting point for a genuine attempt by the whole of football for reconstruction of the game. For too many years (since the Prem breakaway) has the focus been on purely the top end of things. The "rewards" have become too great and greed now rules over business sense at every turn. As much as I despise Comrade Corbyn and his cronies... football genuinely does need to become for the many and not just the few and a far more stable and balanced/equal playing field is required. I think I read somewhere that Liverpool have spent close to £1.5 billion since their last title win. Granted they've recouped a fair chunk too but those numbers are eye watering, yet further down the leagues clubs are going under for amounts that the likes of Van Dyke could raise in a month by giving up 25% of his salary. Sad, twisted times and definitely more grim news to come..
12 point deduction confirmed..................... https://www.efl.com/news/2020/july/efl-statement-wigan-athletic/
To be applied this season if they finish outside the bottom 3. If relegated it will be applied in 20/21. They are on 50 points at present, 8 points above 22nd so would be relegated if the season stopped now. They have had some good form lately so if continued and those at the bottom don't perform they could pull off an escape. Their goal difference is far better than anyone in the bottom 6 so it is possible they could avoid the drop.
