BRISTOL City have turned down a bid of £850,000 for star winger Albert Adomah from Wigan Athletic.

Relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, the Latics are targeting the Ghana international as a potential replacement for Callum McMananam.

The Liverpudlian has been the subject of growing interest from top-flight clubs since his match-winning performance for Wigan in the FA Cup final against Manchester City in May and owner Dave Whelan is ready to sell to the highest bidder.

New Latics boss Owen Coyle wants Adomah, pictured, to help spearhead an instant return to the Premier League following relegation.

But even though Wigan's offer topped £1 million after various add-ons were taken into consideration, it still fell short of City's valuation.

City officials remained tightlipped last night, refusing to comment, while sources in the North West suggested Coyle may now be forced to look elsewhere.

Wigan owner Whelan is not prepared to pay over the odds for a player entering the final year of his contract and says his offer is final.

But former Burnley and Bolton manager Coyle is a confirmed admirer of the 25-year-old Adomah and Wigan could return with an improved bid if McManaman departs the DW Stadium in the coming weeks.

Newly-promoted Crystal Palace are still interested in Adomah, even though they completed the signing of 30-year-old winger Jerome Thomas from West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

The London club made two unsuccessful bids for Adomah in January and are expected to test City's resolve before the transfer window closes at the end of next month.

Eagles boss Ian Holloway sees Adomah as an affordable replacement for Wilfried Zaha, who joined Manchester United this summer, and Palace are prepared to offer in the region of £1m.

City directors face a potentially tricky situation and will be eager to avoid a repeat of the scenario which saw striker Nicky Maynard move to West Ham United for a knockdown fee in January 2012.

Leicester offered £6.5 million for Maynard in the summer of 2011, only for City to deny to Foxes boss Sven-Goran Eriksson permission to approach the forward.

Then into the final year of his contract, the Cheshire-born raider was eventually sold to the Hammers for just £1.25 million six months later.

Similarly, Adomah's market value will plummet if he remains at Ashton Gate beyond the end of this summer and City could come under pressure to cash in on their biggest player asset as they battle to balance the books.

Adomah has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League and Palace are playing a waiting game, hoping that by the time they table a bid, probably in August, City's board will be under intense pressure to sell with the transfer deadline looming.

Meanwhile, long-serving Robins defender Louis Carey has put an end to speculation surrounding his future by signing a new one-year deal.

And the 36-year-old Bristolian, who signed a new one-year deal at the weekend, now has John Atyeo's all-time appearance record firmly in his sights. Carey is just three games away from equalling the legendary striker's tally of 645 games and, barring injury, looks set to eclipse that mark in League One this season.

Although Carey is coming towards the end of a distinguished playing career and is likely to play second fiddle to new signing Aden Flint, O'Driscoll believes his experience and know-how will be invaluable in what is essentially a young squad.

He said: "I think Louis has an important part to play on the pitch. He will never let anybody down when he pulls on a Bristol City shirt. We need to change the dynamic of the team and what happens off the pitch is just as important as what happens on it. Louis will be key to that."

Do we, dont we?- At the end of the season, Alberts value will be Nil. So, basically, would we pay £850,000 to have Albert all season in League 1?

£850,000 to my mind, would be well worth paying-It works out approx £20,000 per league game and if promoted, the monies would be covered. (Or with a decent cup run, though I wouldnt hold my breath tightly on this one ever happening).

I think the club has done the right thing. Different matter if we were talking £2m+

We will get more money if we hold on a bit longer. Failing that he stays with us and if we have a decent season he may stay even longer

Let the bidding commence - hopefully the board have a realistic figure in mind (I would assume anything around 1.25m)?

It would be typical of our board to take this deal, to show they have learnt from the pathetic NM saga, yet all it will really show is that they have learnt nothing!! We need a cash bid of between 1-1.5M and add ons to be worth considering.

You have to consider if keeping him is the difference between going up and not going up, and is promotion worth 850k or more in next seasons revenue, I would suggest it is.

We also need to consider whether Adomah is good enough to get us up to the Championship.

He'll probably miss a ton of football due to the African Cup of Nations, possibly at a time where we'll need him most.

Honestly, for £1M upfront I'd sell Adomah.
