Sunderland visit Wigan in the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup 3rd Round)
    WAFCvSAFC.GIF
Last time out Sunderland drew at Fleetwood and Wigan beat Accrington.
Sunderland face Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup. Lee Johnson could make a number of changes ahead of next weekend's League One game against Bolton.
Tom Flanagan could return to the starting 11 for the Black Cats after missing out due to suspension at the Weekend. Leon Dajaku is expected to make his debut and Corry Evans could start after coming on as a substitute.
Arby Xhemajli and Denver Hume are back in training but are not close to a return yet.
Wigan could rest a few players after their 4-1 away win at Accrington.

    Match Facts:
    · Wigan have beaten Sunderland on two of the last three occasions the sides have met, though have already suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Black Cats on the opening day of League One earlier this season.
    · Wigan and Sunderland have never previously met in the EFL Cup, with their only competitive fixture outside of league clashes coming in January 2008 when both were Premier League sides – a 3-0 win for the Latics at the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup third round.
    · This will be Wigan’s first appearance in the EFL Cup third round for seven years, with their last such game ending in a 0-5 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
    · When facing sides from the same division, Sunderland have been knocked out of the League Cup on six of the last seven occasions, with their only such win in this run coming at Accrington in the first round last season.
    · Aiden O’Brien’s hat-trick for Sunderland in round two was the first in the League Cup by a player from the Republic of Ireland since Robbie Keane’s treble in October 2001 for Leeds United against Leicester City.

    Form.GIF

    Team Line ups
    Sunderland:
Burge; Dyce, Flanagan, Alves, Huggins; Evans, Pritchard, Neil; Broadhead, Dajaku, O’Brien.
Subs: Patterson, Taylor, Younger, Wilding, Richardson, Kimpioka
    Injured: Xhemajli, Willis, Hume.

Wigan Athletic: Amos, Power, Whatmough, Watts, Darikwa, Naylor, Cousins, Lang, Keane, McClean, Wyke
Subs: Pearce, Edwards, Jones, Tilt, Bayliss, Humphrys, Tickle
    Injured: tbc

    Betting Odds:
    Sunderland
    11/10 Wigan 4/6 Draw 23/10

    My two pence:
A good overall display in the last game but we should have seen out the victory after being 2-0 up with 10 minutes to go. At least we got a point and we are still in an automatic promotion spot.
I think we’ll see a few new faces and maybe an opportunity for some of the reserves to shine through. Hopefully Aiden O’Brien will bring his shooting boots again.
    I’m going for a 2-1 away win.

As much as we all love a good cup run i think i'd rather us concentrate on the league.

Play the reserves and kids for game time. Heart wants to win but head isn't bothered either way.

P.S. Great thread as usual RTB

Great thread mate, really is top notch.

We have enough players to have a good run in this, it'll only be a few games tbh so no big deal. It's a shame we drew Wigan because a defeat hands them a slight boost for our league match there.

I hope we get the chance to see players like Alves, Huggins; Dajaku, Broadhead, plus Pritchard who I think will become an important player for us. Having players like these, available for league games, is great for what's a long season. We just need to keep everyone happy including O'Brien who's situation really puzzles me.

I think it'll be high scoring game and we'll come out 3-2 winners ...

... another O'Brien hat trick would be good, striker is an area we're short in.

    Good thread mate.

On a personal note, I wouldn't be risking any senior players at all. The focus has to be on promotion this year and any cup run will hinder that.

That said, there are players that needed minutes so be good to see them in action.

Don’t particularly fancy us here, but going out of the cup wouldn’t be a problem at all. Don’t risk any first teamers.

Part of the quandary is that some of those, I expect to be first teamers by the end of the season, aren't in the starting line up yet ...

... there are also those who'll be rotated who need to keep match fit by playing in games like these.

And if they're not good enough to be seriously challenging for a first team place they shouldn't be here unless they're young players breaking through.

Naturally I have put us down for a win... but if we lose.... not bothered as... I want us to play our 2nd team as it were. Stewart in particular may have a sore ankle and should not play. So RTB, I agree with your team.

If there is a stream, I will of course watch it.

I think both teams will make at least 9-10 changes. I'm hoping for a win but a defeat won't hurt with this one.

Not to fussed on the result, I'm more interested in the likes of Huggins, Broadhead, Dajaku getting minutes and putting pressure on the current starters for a place in the side.
No injuries and no extra time please.

Not too fussed about progressing in the cups this season but momentum and good performances become habit.
Actually fancy us to win though Think both teams will make lots of changes and fancy our second string against anyone
Looking forward to see how Dajaku does

Im all up for it ,and looking forward to seeing how our second team and younguns fair, a good run in this tournament will keep them match fit and therefore easier to slot in the first 11 for injuries cards or poor performance.

oops thanks again for another cracking thread RTB

    cheers again RTB...

not fussed about a cup run this season, would be nice as winning builds momentum but not important in my eyes if we go out we go out.

that said, these are going to be our rivals (at least early days) so to get another one up on them would be good, gives our squad the chance of much needed minutes which is also a good reason to get a few more cup games in.

going to try to enjoy it whatever the result but another good performance from the lads is really going to batter LJ's head.

After the weekends set back I'd like to see LJ treat this seriously and progress into the next round with the proviso we don't risk the senior first teamers.
    great thread again RTB

Wigan will only make 4-5 changes IMO. They don’t have a big squad.
