Interesting to see that Conway made the bench again on Saturday after the development game against Swansea, but Velikonja didn't.

That put Conway amongst 4 midfielders on there alongside Ralls, Bellers and Frei. Apart from keeper Lewis, that gave us one at the back in Nugent and only Gestede as a clear upfront option.

You could argue that Bellars offers a dual role choice, but does including Conway and Frei along with him on the bench mean we're overdoing the wide man bit at the expense of an alternative type of upfront man?

We were dying for wide men with pace last year.

i don't disagree with Malky only having one striker on the bench. There are only two compared to the four midfielder and four defenders. Defo need more cover at the back.

And remember Etien does have time on his side. Maybe Malky's saving him for after Christmas. Unless he buys a replacement for Maynard in the window...

Agreed Sheepy, but we've got 4 now and can only play 2 at any one time - the other 2 sitting it out on the bench,

That takes a quick "off the last man's shoulder" Chopra style player like Etien out of the frame for lack of seats.

Gestede is an obvious candidate to replace Helguson, but there are other options to score goals.

Hey ho - it's great to talk about football again. <ok>

I saw Etien against Newcastle. Scored and was decent in the air. Not a massive fan of Gestede. Play Etien instead Malky!

It does seem a little strange given the other options available. There is flexibility in that some players can play more than one position.

A keeper is a no brainer (though some have gone without cover).
Connoly can play full back or centre back so as long as he's in the squad we fit around him. On the bench he covers all positions, if he starts at FB we put a FB on the bench (if we had one spare, unlike saturday), if a FB gets injured on comes the FB, if a CB gets injured, on comes the FB and Connoly moves inside.
Up front, Rudy is as the only cover for HH with Bellamy covering Mason or the wide positions. If Bellamy starts wide, a wide man for cover as Bellamy can move upfront if needed.

That leaves 3 spots on the bench. A ball player and a blocker in the centre leaves one spot.

With KimBo able to play in the middle as the ball player, why carry another, you might as well have the 'luxury' of Eti. Or is he not as ready as WoL would have you believe?

Here we a are debating football again. Bloody MM and the board allowing us to sign players and have all these options. They've only done it so we don't whinge about them. Last season was easy, why haven't we signed any wide players. Hmm, suppose we'll have to play the 11 fit players we have and leave the dross on the bench!!!!!

Now we've got all these players it's, 'should we play this formation or that', 'should Bellamy play up front or out wide'. Last season was 'why isn't Mason playing', now he's playing, 'why isn't Eto on the bench if he's not good enough to start in front of Mason' and why haven't we bought a replacement for Maynard. If we did, we'd be back to 'why isn't Mason playing'!

    AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's all too hard (somebody mention Minxy?).

What will happen when we sign two full backs in January. What will I have to should and bawl about then. We'll have two wide men (and spare), we'll have cover at full back, what then. These Malaysians are taking all the fun out of the game!

Rudy has done okay when brought on as sub and been used to give tired defences a hard time once Heidar has battered them for an hour or so. He hasn't scored but has made 2 assists plus some near misses.

He and Veronica are very different types of player. Rudy is cover for Heidar but as Sparkey ponted out Veronica is more in the Chopra mode so he would need someone like Heidar/Rudy up with him.

Frei is likely to go back to Fulham after the Wendies game so that may give an opportunity to get Veronica on the bench.

Joking aside but doesn't that show how far we have progressed in under a season and a half?

We were glad to have Parkie for a while but wouldn't entertain his like now.

Sheepy - I'm dismayed you've chosen to mention the Wurzels in a thread about the game we love.

Are you trying to divert attention away from skillfull football ?

Sorry Sparky, just trying to get things back to way it was. No wingers, a striker who can only hit the post and a dismaying quality of left back. God, I miss it..

Yes, I agree Sheepy. We need to get things back on track - where's Ridsdale and Jones?

Regarding our "forgotten" wide man young Kadeem Harris, anyone know if his injury in the Swansea development game has set him back again?

Yep, remote - I heard that about the scans about week back.

Just wondering if they'd sent them off to Boots yet and were waiting for the prints to come back.
