The £8m summer buy from Ipswich has been used sparingly up to now, but Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is ready to press the 18-year-old into action in Saturday’s crunch game against fellow strugglers Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

And, with on-loan frontman Nicklas Bendtner available again after being forced to sit out Sunday’s game against his parent club Arsenal, Bruce is ready to pair Wickham with the Dane as Sunderland go in search of their first away win of the season.

Stephane Sessegnon excelled as a lone striker against the Gunners but he will be used to provide ammunition from the left flank, with Seb Larsson switching to the right and Ahmed Elmohamady the man set to miss out.

“Sessegnon created three massive chances against Arsenal, but I just wonder whether he can get us the goals we need at the moment,” said Bruce. “I know he’ll create from the flanks so it’s in my thoughts to put someone else up front alongside Bendtner. It could be time for Connor.

“We’ve got to go to try to take the game to Bolton.

“There was a reason I didn’t play Ji or Connor against Arsenal.

“I thought with Ji coming back from Korea with all the travelling he’d done, it would have been unfair on him.

“Connor had had a groin injury and hadn’t trained for 10 days before taking part on the Thursday and Friday. I went with Sessegnon as I thought [Per] Mertesacker would struggle against him, and he did.”

Desperate words from a desperate **** manager. We have all been saying this since day one but stubborn **** wouldnt listen. Now, when we have blown any good will and optimism we may have had back in August, he now reverts back to what he should have been playing from the start of the season. Maybe if he had, he wouldnt have blown the cup game, the derby and the WBA game and we would have all been behind him. As it is, I couldnt support him if he picked me up in his car every home game, gave me free tickets and a slap up meal.

I just detest this lame **** manager more and more everyday for creating and developing such huge divisions between us supporters, when it want neccessary.

Anyway, its about time (Wickham in a 442 formation) but because of his incompetent management he will now be thrown in for a do or die game, instead of games v Brighton, Stoke and WBA at home first.

Good luck Connor under this tube of a manager. You wont ever be any better a player under Bruce than you were when you came but maybe under O Neill you may well become what you should be.

How obvious is it that Bruce is finally gonna do what any manager would of done from the start and what we have all been saying from the start but making it sound like his idea, what a ****in plank this man is! I ****in despise the prick!

Well if he does put Sess on the left and Larsson on the right, that ticks a few boxes for me and then play Bentdner + Wickham/Ji please no Elmo or Catts and a back four of O'Shea Turner Brown and McBardo.

The other two midfielders probably Jack and ?Rico/Vaughan/Garnder

We should at least get goals

I hope this is Tongue in cheek syd!

However, I really wouldn't be surprised to see Connor start left wing. Hopefully not

If you read the the echo on a regular basis like i do for my sins you will remember that bruce has said the same thing about possibly starting whickham in the upcoming game for the last 3 games and has then gone on to play 4411 with sess and bendtner so until i read or hear the team news at 3pm on saturday i wont believe a word of the fat headed geordie cos hispre match crack is getting nearly as bad as his post match excuses.

Doesn't really matter as he'll have the winger up front & the striker on the wing.

His craic is becoming ****ing ****e patter now like.

This is just silly Syd, everybody knows that Wickham's natural position is goalkeeper. He just needs a little... persuasion....
