An interesting article on OTIB, I have borrowed it and thank them. * There was a toll house at the western end of North Street which was known as the ‘gate on the way to Ashton’ - now known as Long Ashton....our stadium took its name from that toll house...hope that isn’t too boring for an 8 year old @hoxton casual... * This be it …. please log in to view this image * Yup, the turnpike house was a gated entrance to the city's south west. The Ashmead map of 1828 shows a sturdy barrier across the road in front of the house shown above, with two separate gates. At that time almost the whole of the area around here was open and undeveloped. please log in to view this image These are copies of posts supplied by contributors to OTIB. please log in to view this image Got to be honest. when you see old pictures like these it takes you back " the new ground at ashton gate" 1904 packed stands? covered all round [ to many on pitch to be playing] so must be artistic licence or the old "joke " about watching workmen at has severely diminuished over the years [ although builders bum is still a phrase in use]
