Art matters but only to those who choose to embrace it. Art can't be for all and this is the mistake that is often made but as much art should be made available as possible for the obvious benefits it has. There is an element of subjectivity in art though and we need to understand that what is art for one isn't art for everyone. For instance it is hard to explain why a pile of bricks is art and as much as some graffiti can look colourful I still think it is vandalism, but each to their own. Art isn't just paintings, it can be sculpture, clothing, poetry, music etc. If we are able to lift ourselves out of mundanity and appreciate art it sets us above the beasts which is one of the reasons I cannot accept Islam as they view art as idolatry and music as a sin, as "explained" below; Music, though, apparently does not seem harmful, but it makes you lose your emotional balance and you don’t remain in your normal senses. You become addicted and when there is no music or songs and life becomes miserable, most people even suffer bouts of depression without music. It is a sort of superficial spirituality that, like steroids, gives you short relief at the cost of long term headaches. In most cases, if we could only use our common sense without any preconceived ideas, we can discover the truth. As simple as that. Songs and music create an illusory situation and you are away from the realities of life as you get a bit intoxicated like a sportsman using drugs to improve his performance for a short time but later on suffering more harm than any good.
Despite being an atheist I actually like a lot of religious art. A lot of art derives from our attempts to create images we can easily reference hence ancient civilisations using art as a way of describing everyday activities and beliefs. You can see the influence of religious art in the iconography used in Communist Russia and Fascist Germany. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
Art is everywhere, my good man. It enriches all our senses. A life without art is a life without colour, taste, sound etc. I adore art.
