Hi all football fans why do you support the teams that you do? Is it because they are the in vogue teams, or because they are your local team. For me my grandfather took me to se saints loose to man utd in 1969 and we lost but I have supported Saints ever since
I support Saints because my Dad supports Saints. I was brought up supporting Saints from when I was a kid. It was a good job my Dad wasn't into football when he was a kid as he lived in Sussex - he probably would be supporting Brighton!
Family thing. I have never lived in Southampton, but my Dad's side of the family is all from there, and my Grandfather still is there. Even at 88 years of age he is still attending regularly and I go with him when I can. Love the city and love the team.
Moved to Southampton when I was 8 . They were my local team . Now live in dorset but do love southampton as a city .
I don't know for sure but very vaguely, it's a local thing. I was the first in my direct family to care about football, been saying I was a Saints fan since I can remember. Lived in Eastleigh until I was 8 or 9, so it was either Southampton or Portsmouth (not reeeeally close enough to be one by default) but chose Southampton for some reason. Probably my uncle's influence.
Lived in southampton all of my life. Had a season ticket for 10 seasons (well since they have been at st marys) and considering I'm 19 thats pretty good imo.
Brought up to support Bournemouth. moved to Winchester at 13 and rebelled and started following Saints. 37 years later and still as proud and passionate as ever!
Old story told before...took my son to see ManU beat Saints 1.0 and became hooked. Took my son a few more months to switch from ManU to Saints supporter.
Southampton born and bred, started going to the Dell rattle in hand with my older brother 1965/66 and followed them every where. Moved to Devon and found most people were Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal, But i keep reminding them there not real supporters and i have been to there respected teams ground more times than them. Oldest Son lives in Norway and is Southampton through and through, is flying back especially for the Coventry game. Oldest Daughter lives in Nottingham and is also Southampton Through and through, in fact i think she is still traumatized from losing to Derby in the Play offs.
I have my mum to thank really. She lived in London and needed to go somewhere to do her final years midwife training and as she was a big football fan she chose the one place which at the time had a first division football team. And the rest is well....history
Born and bread Southampton , and have taken my sons since they were 3 and 4 , they r now 16 and 19.... My first game was an f a cup game against Wrexham we lost 1-0.
Two reasons (possibly three I can't remember). Firstly, living in Leicestershire I supported Leicester like the rest of my family. At age 12 I decided I'd had enough of them and decided to look for someone else. I remember at the time my favourite cricketer was Barry Richards and as he played for Hampshire I decided to find out who the best football team were in that county and follow them. Obvious choice really. I also have a vague recollection of being a fan of Mick Channon but can't remember if that really came after I made my choice or not. That was December 1974 and I think we were in the top six. Six months later we were relegated but I'd made my choice and stuck with them ever since. Decided at age 14 to go to Southampton Uni too despite school wanting me to try for Oxford or Cambridge. Started at Southampton Uni in 1980 when Kevin Keegan joined.
Moved to Southampton in 1971 aged 10, so not much choice in the matter. Went to Springhill RC Juniors, right opposite the Dell, and couldn't wait to find out what happened inside there. Moved back to London in 1982, but have always stayed loyal to Saints despite occasional trips to Highbury and White Hart Lane. Took my son to St Mary's many times when he was in his early teens, but I think he only went to please me and his grandad, as he was already afflicted with the gooner virus. Now I keep reminding him that we've won more silverware than Arsenal in the last couple of years. Hopefully we'll play em again next season.
Absolutely! I'll never really understand why there can be any other reason for supporting a team (apart from family). Having said that I will own up to having a Man Utd scrap book when I was a kid, but I got over it. I now have 2 step sons who support, wait for it, West Ham, after their Dad. I keep working on them. I reckon that if we can get promoted and West Ham not, all the extra publicity etc might just be enough to turn them.
My history with them is probably known by all have told all often enough. Mostly my favorite Uncles influence at the age of 5. Although could just of easily have been Pompey because of my Grand fathers influence (we were very close) Later I guess it was because of George Horsful's influence when I played for Southampton schools. A regular down the Dell (apart from military service) and a season ticket holder since st Mary's. Have been lucky enough to have played at the dell as well. My claim to fame is beating Johnny Sydenham by a nose in a race from goal line to goal line down the dell. Terry Paine being the judge. Well Johnny was army at the time and I was Navy so no way was I going to let a pongo beat me!! (Older military personnel will know what that was all about)
Well I use to support Man Utd when I was a naive little boy in the 90's with players like Cantona, Schmeichel, Solskjær. I even remember asking for a United bootbag for my birthday and my grandad being a massive Arsenal support refusing and buying me an Arsenal one instead. ha! It wasn't until I went to see Southampton at The Dell to see my first professional game and seeing Le Tisser score. From then on started following Saints, going to as many games as possible before I became a STH.
