Why did the British football supporter lose their admiration and love for Man U?

On this day when we have had thoughts about those lost at Munich in 1957, it is also, as one of our blue brethren from the other side of the city has said, maybe a time to air the reasons for the fact that Man U are so universally detested by supporters of every other of the 92.

My opinion is that in the 1970's, Tommy Docherty kick-started the anti Man U feelings among many non Man U fans because he would never give any team credit for their performance against Man U. He gloated in triumph and slagged in defeat.

Whereas Busby had always been gracious in defeat as well as in triumph. I remember City beating Man U several times between '74 and '79 and each time all Docherty could do was whinge instead of giving credit to City.

Since then as they have become more successful, many of their so called fans have forgotten how much each of the 92 clubs depend on each other. Their scorn for the rest of English football is well known by all.

And the club themselves became leaders in the money grabbing invention of the Champions League where the biggest clubs in each country just get bigger and bigger financially. To change it from the European Cup open only to each nations LEAGUE CHAMPIONS into a circus for the rich to get richer meant that the risk of losing in an early round against a little team was totally removed.

And all the time that this competition goes on, the more it means that 95% of all league clubs in every European country, do not stand a hope in hell of ever winning it. The days of fairytale winners like Forest, Celtic and even Ajax are gone.

I started to really dislike them when they opted out of the FA Cup to to to Brazil (I think) for money.
Man Utd are one of the main reasons the FA Cup has lost is lustre.

My dislike of Man Utd gets worse every time I watch SAF moans about officials or other players.
The difference is the F A are scared stiff of him, he's a bully, and gets away with murder.

Agree though to be fair to Sir Fergusson, his sides always play good attacking football - at the end of the game against Fulham on Saturday he had RVP, Rooney, Hernandez and Wellbeck on the pitch at the same time

I think its got something to do with the English mentality, most of us like to support the underdog, with united being the most successful English side in premiership history, if your not a Man U fan, most like to see them lose, is it down to Sir Alex being hated, could be, but you can't take it away from the man, he's a born winner, like his team.

Personally I don't find them exciting to watch, there are other teams that play entertaining football but fail to be consistent as united in winning.

    .
It's not down to the club/team why the majority of the population dislike Man u, its the massive hatred of the so called 'man u supporter', found in every work place, in every pub and in every town, they wear the shirt, name their kids Ryan or Wayne, talk about how 'we' beat City blah blah blah..... but they've never been to Manchester let alone watched them play! biggest bunch of ****ers around!

I posed the question yesterday, but don't have an answer.
Like many things in life there's probably a number of contributing factors, some inter-related.
Cidered makes excellent points, and I'd add in the perceived treatment of Wilf McGuinness and Frank O'Farrell,
who never stood a chance in the shadow of Matt Busby.
The Busby Babes were a team of the era when the fan could feel a bond with the players..ordinary blokes
with a wonderful talent. We see now how in many cases that bond has been broken by the riches in the game,
and United were one of the first clubs to profit from those riches.
We do like the underdog in this country, to shoot down the successful. It's interesting to attempt to determine
now who is the underdog when the two Manchester clubs clash; where do the sympathies lie?
Ferguson has also contributed. His achievements are immense and his teams generally play fine football, but the
man himself is the very antithesis of Matt Busby.
And they seem to be the club favoured by any Johnny-Come-Lately or minor celebrity (together with Chelsea).
Yet anyone who loves the beautiful game will be thankful for Law, Best, Charlton, Giggs.....................

Think you got it right there - its the English disease.
Winning - not really very nice is it !

Personaly I think Manchester United are a credit to our national game, and always have been.
English football would be a pale shadow of itself if we didnt have United.

Yes by why do a significant percentage of British football fans detest the club so much?

With regards to 'opting' out of the FA Cup - that was the decision of the FA who made them participate in the tournament to boost their bid for the 2006 World Cup.

If I remember righty United wanted to defend the FA Cup and didn't want the inconvenience of travelling to Brazil in mid-season. It cost them their defence of the Champions League because they came back to England and straight into a two legged tie with Real.

It's not very British to like winners - we like to build people up then knock them down

Spot on - just like I hate Liverpool because they dominated everything in the 70s/80s!

What pisses me off are the twats who moan about the amount of man utd fans outside of Manchester, as if every other fan supports the team in the city they live!

I do enjoy the way the play. But my dislike is the fact like Massive says its the fans saying WE and yet never been to Manchester. I bet if we ever played them the gate would be full of extra Bristol people supporting Man U and saying We done this We done that.

This is what I thought happened as well?

SAF is a genius, and he seems to have chilled over the last couple of seasons
He knows how to motivate and everyone hating them makes them better
Ps when I say everyone, quite a lot love them all over the world

Man Utd are an English footballing institution which I believe was built on the aftermath of the Munich disaster and many people see them as their second team to support behind their local team.

I have always been a United supporter and was thrilled to have Albert Morgan (equipment manager for United) visit my house for a barbeque several years ago. When I asked him what was his favourite stadium, other than the obvious, it was no surprise to me that he said the Nou Camp in Barcelona, and to watch him celebrating United's Champions League victory the following season in Barcelona was a special treat.

I know they have fallen from the pinnacle of English support over the last few years and in my opinion it could be down to the fact that our top division had become a bit too predictable for many, and that is not necessarily down to United but more to do with the advent of a top five contenders every season.

Nonetheless they still command tremendous respect all over the world and will continue to do so for many years to come.

A Liverpool fan, an Bristol City fan and a Manchester United fan were all inArabia , sharing a smuggled crate of booze when, all of a sudden, Saudi police rushed in and arrested them.
The mere possession of alcohol is a severe offence in Saudi Arabia, so for the terrible crime of actually being caught consuming the booze, they are all sentenced to death! However, after many months and with the help of very good lawyers, they are able to successfully appeal their sentences down to life imprisonment.
By a stroke of luck, it was a Saudi national holiday the day their trial finished, and the extremely benevolent Sheikh decided they could be released after receiving just 20 lashes each of the whip. As they were preparing for their punishment, the Sheikh announced:"It's my first wife's birthday today, and she has asked me to allow each of you one wish before your whipping.
" The Liverpool fan was first in line, he thought for a while and then said: "Please tie a pillow to my back." This was
done, but the pillow only lasted 10 lashes before thewhip went through. When the punishment was done he had to be carried away bleeding and crying with pain as he walked alone.
The Man-U fan was next up. After watching the Scouser in horror he said smugly, "Please fix two pillows to my back.
" But even two pillows could only take 15 lashes before the whip went through again and the ManU fan was soon led away whimpering loudly.
The Bristol City fan was the last one up, but before he could say anything, the Sheikh turned to him and said: "You support one of the greatest clubs in the world and your team plays in the finest city's in the world. For this, you may have
    two wishes!"
"Thank you, your Most Royal and Merciful highness", he replied.
"In recognition of your kindness, my first wish is that you give me not 20 lashes but, 100 lashes." "Not only are you an honourable, handsome and powerful man, you are also very brave". The Sheikh said with an admiring look on his
face. "If 100 lashes is what you desire, then so be it. And your second wish"?
"Tie the Man U fan to my back."

Superb ROD. That proves conclusively that Bristol City may make one sad, despondent or even depressed but in spite of that we never lose our sense of humour.

For me it was probably SAF, whilst his record is not in question, his personal skills are. Yet again this week he is in the press whinging that the kick off schedules are not giving Utd the best chance of success in the Champions League this season, does he ever give it a rest?

I grew up in the era of Liverpool being the team that won almost everything, and the big difference between the 2 is the manager, you never heard Bob Paisley come out slate refs about not playing enough injury time if his team didn't score, or too much if the opposition scored. Also Paisley did it an era when squads were significantly smaller than they are today, and could only name 3 subs per game (imagine that now), equally it was at a time when only the national league winners went in to Europe's premier club competition, something which if it was applied today, would leave SAF with nothing too whinge about this week.

The man has no decorum and that is probably why most do not like Man Utd anymore, if they ever did!! The bacon faced twat!!
