I am reading these headline and I can't believe the aid we give to wealthier nations
    * https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-government-aid-china-b2374435.html
    * https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/07/18/britain-foreign-aid-india-space-rocket-launch/

China, India the European Union and a host of other nations, we are so over taxed, borrow so much, over burdened, why ,oh why do we give most of it away and ignore the UK nationals plight,

I am getting ancient now but I do worry for the future of our younger people, we really are a nation of lions being ruled by donkies

(Maybe I should have said, " Why do we give such a high total to wealthier nations)

I’m all for helping people or nations in need, but I have to say the mind boggles how we send aid to India when they have their own space program, I really don’t get it.

If we cut out foreign aid to those who really don't need it such as India, or those who don't deserve (or need it) and who wish us harm either physically or via espionage, like China, we'd save a few quid that's for sure.

But we're our own worst enemies too

And in Jeremy Hunt we have a Chancellor who just wants more and more in tax. If the billions of pounds given to the NHS every year was channelled into patient care rather than additional management layers and funding woke idealogy that would be better for patients and our wellbeing too

If we weren't spending £6m a day unnecessarsarily on immigrants filling up our hotels that the British public can't then book for themselves and therefore help boost our own economy we'd all be better off, let alone what it costs in providing the manpower and machines to keep the likes of Border Force and co going plus giving the immigrants free phones and spending money.

The price of our diesel and petrol is also falsely inflated and stops people travelling while transportation and food costs rise. The Government were supposed to be publishing and naming and shaming petrol companies and supermarkets who just profiteer out of this situation and telling people where the cheapest fuel is locally. So where is it ?

And as for people who don't need to work because of the huge benefits they are able to claim, often, illegally, where is their incentive to actually get out of bed and work ? Why isn't the government recouping some of the vast outlay from these people who are fit to work, but due to the overly generous system don't need to ?

And to all the youngsters out there who are starry eyed and vote against the establishment simply because that's what young people do when they can first vote, then all I can say is that after a few years of Labour rule and even higher taxes than these currently, they'll be sorry when they realise it's not a better standard of life they'll get, and nor will any of the existing problems be solved,

And to those who will knowingly vote Labour regardless of the facts that they have no policies in place, or even any alternative suggestions to any of the current issues, have a leader who is wetter than a Haddock, and a party filled with the likes of Lammy, Huq and Abbot and their warped priorities and idealogical thinking, then they should know better. The same party that is anti Brexit, and was pro even longer lockdowns.

Even Corbyn is having a go at Starmer now and calling him a coward over his stance on the continued use of barges to house immigrants when they get elected, despite the fact it's a million times better than a camp in Calais with no or few facilities where these people have come from !

A united party they're still not, never have been, and never will be.

But those running the country both at the top of industry and the government are just as bad.

The Tories have got it badly BADLY wrong by not promoting growth, high tax for normal people, killing small businesses by high business taxation, big and nanny state, and who don't have the balls to stick two fingers up to the rest of the world about the immigration mess and actually sort things out.

Apathy will get the most votes at the next election as there is nothing to vote for.

The current Torie party is no better than the looney labour party.

Neither fit to govern our country.

We shouldn't be spending £6m a day on hotels, that is down to the failure of the government to process the claims in a timely manner and the backlog. Get them processed and either deported or stay and work How can it take over 18 months. It's lucky we have the extra £350m a week for the NHS post brexit to offset the cost.

Completely agree Wiz, I am extremely worried as well. I can't think of one thing the government are doing right. I have no faith in Labour whatsoever either. Whatever happens in the next couple of years I can't see the country recovering for a decade or more. Think we have seen the best of it.

'get them processed and either deported or stay and work'.

    Starmer will get them processed.
    Zero will be deported.
100% will be allowed to stay.

    Guess what.
A few boats will turn into an Armada.

you are affecting local business-local trade-local economy's-local tourism-in turn affecting revenue from taxes and vat into the system. All because you are allowing illegals to invade the towns and cities and villages. You have got it so wrong. Time to walk

People of our generations HAVE had the best of life could offer us over the last few decades.

There was depravation after the second world war as we recovered from the damage and loss of lives. There were a few other bumps on the way in the mid-late 70's and the financial crisis of 2008

But by and large we had the best that music had to offer, cheap utility bills, there was safety at home (aside from the IRA occasionally), usually cheap, tasty and home produced food, we watched technological advances such as space exploration and the likes of the Jumbo jet meaning cheap travel for the whole world and Concorde for those who could afford it coming along, and generally people of this country largely all felt the same way, they were patriotic, respected authority including the Police, and we all wanted the best for our country, and even if we disagreed with each other, including within Parliament, it was done politely.

Now with rising crime everywhere, especially knife oriented, terrorism and the constant threat of it from within the UK (sometimes from people rescued by British services abroad!) and wider and wider division and sheer hatred emerging in all manner of things and, it sometimes looks and feels like a foreign country.

People are also narcissistic and entitled.

We need to start producing our own energy by extracting as much oil from the North Sea as possible and natural Gas from Cumbria via fracking. In the background we need to start on getting the small modular nuclear reactors from Rolls Royce online in the next decade and not rely on foreign imports. This creates jobs, lower domestic bills in time, national wealth, and dare I say, exports abroad.

And the worst part of all of this is that it's nearly all self inflicted wounds that could, and should have been avoided as we sold everything off to the highest bidder or let the unions loose on our once world renowned and prosperous industries, and generally took our eye of the ball whilst trusting people who didn't have the best interests of the country at heart to run it badly.

This in turn has hastened the continued loss of Britishness that the country was also famous for.
And once it's gone and we're just part of a Muslim majority country in terms of faith, we'll wonder what happened and who allowed it.
The uncomfortable answer is, we all did by allowing our politicians to carry our social experiments.

I was about to say the same thing.
The Labour Party has historically been the party of tax and spend - and the Tories the party of low taxation, yet right now, today under the TORIES - for the past 13 years we are taxed higher than at any time in our history - with what to show for it?
This country has become a shambles and a laughing stock.

I agree with the OP. Aid to the poorer nations trying to get a grip is fine, but aid to superpowers and big economies? Why the F?
I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out we are sending aid to Russia at this rate.
    Ridiculous.

As always it seems with me, I think the answer is somewhere in the middle.
We seem to have a bottomless pit of money to throw at housing these people whilst they go to the back of a huge queue to be processed. IMHO if we diverted HALF of that money into streamlining the processing then we would (a) have less people in expensive hotels/barges and (b) boost the worker pool and have the (successful) migrants working - and paying taxes, which would ease the burden and pay towards the processing of the next ‘batch’ of applicants.
Of course we can’t simply throw open our borders to everyone, but right now we have people here, costing us £millions, who WANT a to work and contribute, but can’t because they are stuck in a broken system that is not fit for purpose.

It would be a great idea if we treated the illegals like students, house them as required but explain to them they are being invoiced for all sevices and loans, when they are settled, paying their way and taxes like the rest of the nation, whack them with the total bill they have ran up, stick an interest rate like the students and give them a fixed period to pay off their accumilated debts, they can always opt out, go home or choose a designated destination, their choice and no freebee.

Have wondered why, or actually stopped to think what might be the cause? You made a statement that you always seem to be in the middle [ ground ] but from an outside view you are not. An understanding of how the system works [ and I am far from actually knowing it all, but investigate for bits I dont ] really helps, but it means you cant look at the now you have to look at the why, and not just a parliamentary term but maybe 5 or 6 of them! You are condemning the tories for 13 years taxation! well did you or any of your family recieve .gov sponsored money during Covid or in the past lets say 3 years?
I personally thank the .gov for the austerity which in fact was less painful than the opposition and media stoked it up to be......... yes services got behind but we did have a healthy bank balance to pay out £bn's during covid and the year after.. did have money to help with energy costs and yet we still also managed to increase infra structure/ emergency services personell / and increase living wage [ wish I had that, WHEN YOUNGER, when I was working! ]. Do I feel for those that are now paying 5%-6% for mortgage or 28+% on their credit cards ... NO ... at this moment in time would I vote tory NO ... do I understand why the interest rates are higher or taxation is higher [ is it really my research says it has been a lot worse in the past!

would be a good idea but I doubt any of them would pay up ... it might be necessary to say you can stay here, but you need to be doing a legal job paying tax and for 5 years you get no .gov hand outs The first thing we take via / from your employer is 5% of your gross wage for money owed on your invoice! next will be 10% of your gross for future state pension entitlement. [ illegals are costly now!!? wait til they get to 67 ! and the cost then will soar ] should you decide to leave and go home then this kitty will be put toward your invoice with a maximum of 51% stopped the rest you get back tax free!
The money left will be treated as income under the rules of the .gov .. the same for all people/ workers!
dont like it OK thats fine Where shall we buy you an airline ticket to

That's R&W, lovely bloke but would never shoot himself.

    You assume they're 'legal'.
    Why ?
Because don't believe the figures saying so many % are 'legal'.
Just look at the single males traipsing up the Kent beaches.
If they were 'legal' they'd come across 'legally' with the other 600,00 immigrants.
And folk wonder why there's a housing shortage.

And lack of GP appointments, dentists, etc etc
All self made problems that could all be solved in a heartbeat if we had any balls
But we have to brow beat and care how the rest of the world would react

I'm 56 years old JGF and I've lived through governments of different persuasions during that time, both bad and terrible.
Although I was too young to actually realise what was happening at that specific time I would say that the worst government during my lifetime was probably the Labour government during the Winter of Discontent, when the union barons brought the nation to its knees.
Having said that, the Liz Truss government probably takes the ticket for the most economic damage done in the shortest ever time.

I probably appear more left wing to you and some others on here (this is a very blue forum politics-wise), because I don't like the current government which happens to be Tory - and I try to point out where I think they have done things wrong and could have done better, but I can assure you I'm not a follower of any 'brand' of politics.
If/when we get a Labour government I'm sure I'll be complaining and moaning about them too. I certainly don't think they have the answers - they are as much of a shower of **** as the Tories are.

Or controversially how about we process them in an orderly and speedy manner, then the legitimate ones, albeit they arrived via an illegal method, bearing in mind there are only legitimate routes from Ukraine, Afghanistan or Hong Kong, be allowed to find work and pay their way like the rest of us. Thus allowing us to send the ones that fail to be denied entry.

I’d seriously vote for anyone that would undo a lot of the mistakes made over the last 13 years

But I think it’s going to be a whole different world of pain for ordinary folk under Mr Flip Flop and the mental far left hangers on, plus the unions, when they come to power and therefore I don’t find a single thing they say to be credible

All I can see happening is more immigrants and us moving closer to the EU who have proved over the last few years that we’re better off away from them
