Why are sky using Beckham as a pundit reference England's world cup chances
A poor performing player in high importance games surely a class performer such as Beardsley, Robbo or Linnicker etc would be better equipped to judge our possible performances

Did you watch the game v Greece or away v Germany in the same competition? Beckham practically carried the England team at that time. He was unlucky to be injured (or wrongly sent off) during the finals when at his prime.

Beckham is as successful as it gets for an Englishman in the past 20 years.

    Make that 40 years

For a goal against Greece?? NO he had world class right to left curved pass ability but no sense in or desire to defend no left foot zero heading ability no pace and no ability in going past defenders
More seriously he did not perform in the really big world cup games
Ps Germany used their dreadful performance (5_1) to very successfully reshape and and move beyond us again

Aside from having golden balls. Beckham was a world class free kick taker World class crosser. Top class long range passing and Zidane said he was world class so who are we to argue!

But jesting aside, Beckham was underrated as a player, gave his all for England and you can't lay much blame at him for England being a failure as that's a more widespread issue.

    Better than Gazza?
Better for England than Robbo,LIneker,Waddle, Beardsly,Gerard,Sheerer,Adams etc not in your wildest dreams he was a good class international and even world class against lesser oposition but never demonstrated world class performance when essential
Where always world class was when the media lens spotted

I don't think any England player this side of '66 has made a mark on the world stage like Cruyff or Maradona or any number of Brazilians, Germans, Italians or even French or Spaniards who have won international honours. Beckham was as good at international level as any of the other Englishmen you have mentioned. Robson was never as dynamic as he was for Utd, Shearer never got the same volume of goals that he did in the PL, Adams lacked pace and movement, Lineker & Beardsley were an effective partnership with Gazza and Waddle in midfield, but aside from a decent run in 1990 the hype far outweighs their actual achievements.......Beckham is in the same class as all these - a decent player, but playing in a team which was never going to be better than the best of the second class, whatever spin the tabloids put on it. England have rarely, if ever, produced top class players - certainly not players with mesmerising the skills needed to win the major trophies.

Agreed but we did produce players that would have been. considered world class in better teams Gazza for instance plus Waddle both of whom. Could produce the unexpected on a regular basis

Put Gerard into any of the top past German teams and he would have been classified as world class

Beckham simply lacked beyond his one trick pony talent

Man Utd, Real Madrid, AC Milan & PSG isn't a bad CV for a one trick pony.

Spurs are always airbrushed out of Beckham's career profile for some reason...

This is a ridiculous thread. Sure, Beckham might not be the best choice as a pundit but to criticise his England career is just pathetic. Beardsley achieved basically ****-all with England.

Linekar is the BBC's front man, he's hardly likely to be on Sky's panel is he?

Robbo? I assume you mean Bryan and not Paul? I doubt half the viewing audience will know who Bryan Robson is nowadays.
