Talking of refs, I listened to an interview with Graeme Poll on TalkSport the other night, and when asked if he and other referees were more likely to give decisions to home teams, his reply was no, but then went on to say that he, and any referee with ambition, was far less likely to give decisions against a top four side, simply because it meant they would get bad headlines. He went on to say that if he gave a penalty against Norwich that turned out to be a bad decision, then nobody would really care, but if he gave a penalty against Man U that turned out to be wrong, then it would go down really badly for him or any referee, and he said that he would only give a penalty against them if he was 120% sure, and when even Sir Alex couldn't complain... I thought this was a shocking thing to say, even if it is what we all know to be true already..

Not sure myself - Dean should've booked Tiote long before he did - if not worse as he stamped on Cattermole's achilles. I think they'll be hoping for Webb again as penalties are given for falling over when they get in the box with him - although he might have looked at that decision and try to even it up on Saturday! Dean wouldn't know what to do with his Yellow Card if Cattermole wasn't there as he won't have an excuse to book him early on (He also booked McClean for winning the ball - nothing dirty in the challenge at all - watch the replay he hardly made any contact with Simpson but Simpson raised his hands and put his head towards him) - and we have a player sent off for "Foul language") - I couldn't see him swear until after the red card had been given!
Its a thankless job.I have seen a couple of refs get smacked on a Sunday morning and more at 5 a side. Then you get the ref's who don't make decisions against dirty players because they are scared of them and those players are the ones that end up injuring someone else. I have seen it get out of hand a few times now. The most bizzare one I have ever seen was a player on opposition team during the game run over to a supporter watching a match on the next pitch, have a dust up with him (our game stopped) then walk back on as if nothing had happened, the ref did nothing. To be honest I did not have a clue what the rules were but, apparently its a straight red. The player in question was a ref himself and the incident was something to do with a previous game he had been reffing in a different league.
Refs are just spine-less puppets of the big 4 clubs most of the time and this is only confirmation of what we have all known for years. It's a total disgrace but not a shock.
Nothing wrong with McClean's tackle and it was all Simpson in the wrong? Cattermole didn't swear before he was sent off and also didn't deserve to be sent off after less than a minute? Perhaps I'm not in a fair position to pass an unbiased opinion, but EVERY SINGLE ONE of my mates who support other teams would disagree with those 3 points above.
McCleans tackle was aggressive but contact was minimal and there was nothing wrong with it, you can be as aggressive as you like in a tackle as long as it is a fair one. It was Simpson who's reaction was stupid and there was no need for it. Cattermole rightly saw yellow for his early tackle but that is never a red or me. Tiote should have seen yellow for scraping his studs down Catts ankle, an offence he repeated on Song on Monday.
In the rules, the exact opposite of this is stated, aggressive tackles warrant a yellow, tackles using excessive force warrant a red. I agree with the Cattermole tackle being a yellow but by the strict letter of the law, it should have been red. As for Tiote's tackle, I was in the stadium and have seen no replays since, so can't comment on that.
Are you absolutely ******ed? Like I said, I was in the stadium, possibly up to 100 yards from the incident. Is it any surprise that I can't see what something the size of a stud is doing? And since there have been no replays of the incident, I see no way that I possibly could comment on it. P.S. Moderators, it's not Newcastle fans, it's ****tards like this that ruin the forum, wanting to cause an argument when there really isn't one to be made.
I can see why the tackle angers mags fans Cheik, it was a bit reckless but there was no harm done and you can't not expect strong challenges in a derby, Simpson had no need to react like that and if he didn't the whole cafuffle that happened afterwards wouldn't have occurred. It was an honest attempt to win the ball.
I agree entirely, but at the end of the day the ref should be going by the book, and by the book it was a yellow/ borderline red. I personally love to see those kind of tackles going in.
