Arsene Wenger has confessed the summer transfer window has not gone according to plan, but he assured Arsenal fans that they can hope to see a signing of "super quality" arrive "next week".

Wenger has spent more of his time attempting to hold on to his current squad rather than adding to it, with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri linked with moves away from north London. Both situations remain unresolved as the duo miss Saturday's friendly against Benfica.

The Gunners boss, who has not delivered a trophy since 2005, admits he has been as frustrated as the fans, revealing he had hoped to complete his summer dealings by now.

"Ideally I would have finished all [our business], but it doesn't work like that," Wenger said. "We work very hard, we are non-stop working throughout the summer. It's all kinds of things you meet during the transfer market, but I can understand the impatience of people."

So far Gervinho represents Wenger's only major success in the transfer window, although he has been strongly linked to Juan Mata, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill. None of those moves have materialised, but the Arsenal boss promised he is working on something that will please the Emirates faithful.

"We want to add not quality, but super quality," said Wenger. "We hope to give you some good news soon. Next week, something might happen."

Wenger also confirmed there is no chance, regardless of negotiations with Barcelona, that skipper Cesc Fabregas will face Newcastle next weekend. "I don't think Fabregas will be ready to start the season because he has been out for a long time and has had no games," the Frenchman confirmed

Alex Chamberlain from Southampton, or the Costa Rican kid Joel Campbell.

    Or Samir Nasri from Arsenal.
