We support Chelsea first and foremost, but lets face it, most of us have some kind of sadistic streak in us and take joy from seeing another team fail. I know that I took pleasure in watching Liverpool fall from being European Champions and top 4 in the Premier League to being a midtable club. (I cant help it). So my question is this: Which club would you like to see fail in achieving their target? Man City Man Utd Arsenal Spurs Liverpool I have no doubt this will get jumped on by people in the other forums but I am bored and dont care
Yonks ago, when Danny Baker used to do 606 on Radio 5 (the first time around - early 90s I think), I remember a Norwich fan calling in to say he genuinely hated every other team except Norwich equally and wished there was some way they could all lose every match they ever played. Baker thought he was on a wind up at first, but the amount of vitriol the lad poured out in a 5 minute call was truly inspiring - he couldn't even bring himself to hate Ipswich with a special passion, because he loathed every other club equally and without exception. Personally, I've always had clubs I dislike more than others and the odd soft spot as well (no 2nd team mind - can't be having that bollocks), but I wish I could be more like that Norwich fan and just genuinely not give a toss about any other club than CFC. I think I might make that my mission this season, so can we have an "all of the above (and every other team)" option in the poll please?
I have a soft spot for other teams aswell, for instance, Hearts in the SPL. But thats cos a couple of my mates are from Edinburgh and are ardent fans. I also like Ipswich, for a really ******ed reason, I got a football manager game on my Playstation 1 when I was like 13, and I clicked choose a random club and ended up with Ipswich town. (This was in the days when they had Richard Wright, Mauricio Taricco, Kieron Dyer, James Scowcroft, Matt Holland, Marcus Stewart etc). And I took them to the Champions League Since then I have had a soft spot for Ipswich lol Also abroad I kinda like Ajax, Fiorentina and Bayern Munich. But I wouldnt class any of them as a 2nd team.
Symptomatic of what's wrong with football nowadays: tribalism and fans driven by hatred. If that's 'inspiring' then what a sad society we live in.
Nah, you're taking it too seriously. The call was funny, because this lad was genuinely in a quandry when asked about his local rivals - he sounded so depressed when he admitted he couldn't dislike Ipswich more than he already disliked every other team for no other reason than them not being Norwich. Let me give you an example. When we were struggling in the league last season and it became abvious we weren't going to be in contention to win it, I kept getting mates asking me who I wanted to see win the league instead. Now, most of them were either CFC fans or supported teams not involved in the title shake-up, but they all felt they had to nail their colours to the mast somehow and support City or United (or Spuds until Jan/Feb time) so they had some sort of "interest" in the outcome. Now, City, Utd, and Spuds have all broken my heart at some point in my life by beating CFC. I've got bad memories associated with all of them - and nearly every other club at some point as well. That being the case, I couldn't answer the question who do I WANT to see win the league. I want Chelsea to win it of course. And, if they can't, then it really doesn't matter to me who wins it instead. I just can't be arsed with the petty points scoring of laughing at Spuds collapse for example, because Chelsea didn't take advantage of it (in the league anyways). What difference does it make to me that City pipped Utd with the last kick of the season? I didn't want either of them to win the title. I guess maybe "hate" was the wrong word to use in my first post. What that Norwich fan was trying to say (to my mind anyways) was that supporting Norwich was so all-consuming to him that there just wasn't time to concern himself with other clubs, even Norwich's most hated local rivals. That, to me, is the essence of supporting a club - it's not about being obsessed with other clubs and doing them down and taking pleasure in their failures. It's about wanting them all to fail equally, so that your club succeeds. That, in a nutshell, is what supporting a team is all about.
But they cant fail equally, 4 teams will make the champions league, which means 16 teams wont, only 3 teams can be relegated etc. Obviously i want Chelsea to win the league more than anything else, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt laugh if Liverpool got relegated (wont happen but just an example). Im primarily a Chelsea fan, but I also like football in general. I watch the FA, CC and CL finals every year, regardless of whether Chelsea are involved or not. Because I enjoy football.
Oh, I guess it misinterpreted your post and there's nothing wrong with having interest in your team over all others, indeed I think support should be about supporting your own team, not hating another team regardless of whether they're your rivals (hence why I never join in with the anti-Southampton chants at Portsmouth). Though I don't think that's incompatible with enjoying football as a whole. Although I think in some circumstances, it's definitely important to look at the bigger picture and consider football as a whole, particularly in issues relating to football finance and what may not be the best for your own club may be better for the sport of football as a whole (the football creditors rule being a prime example).
I certainly get where you are coming from. Frankly couldn't give a monkeys either way as to where the title ended up last year. I could have made a case for wanting either team to win it (or fail). Ultimately it was hilarious to see United done in the last seconds of the season but wouldn't have bothered me if they had of won it. However if City and Spurs were going for the title final day, I'd have to support City. I love Chelsea, am indifferent towards 95% of all other clubs but dislike a select few who I'd always want to see fail. Rivalry is a massive part of football. Historical rivalries, derbies etc all add to the spice of a season.

There's nothing wrong with flying the flag for the team and shouting / encouraging them from the stands! Sport can and does arouse passion! However the word "Hate!" is quite ridiculous when applied to teams that aren't your favourites! Rivals for trophies are ones you'd prefer to see lose, but if they win you cant simply hate them! Hate is something you reserve for those that have committed evil!
Spurs are evil.In fact they are in fact worse than evil.Any club that allows it's players to do this should banned for ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KEMMfV5-Qg
Exactly! I'll admit I dislike Liverpool and Tottenham, and it's natural to have some teams you prefer more than others (and some less than others) but most of the time I don't really pay them much attention to them and I certainly don't waste my time hating them and I agree, hate is something you should reserve for those who truly deserve it based on their actions (e.g. Bashar Assad).
I dont hate any team either, but again, doesnt stop me cackling at their misfortunes sometimes. It is only a game after all.
