A good interview with Gareth Southgate today on BBC where he says that motivating overpaid young players is impossible and is in part the reason why they are not interested in international accolades. The average base salary in the Premier is just under 50K per week and the top players get way more than that if you look at the overall picture. Is it any wonder why they should be interested in playing for England when the quicker they can get back to their Bentleys and mansions in never never land (or Cheshire) the better because there they can count their money and shove it up our noses. It makes me wonder why the hell we bother when they clearly have no intention of ever putting on the shirt with pride and commitment? Gareth made the statement that I have been thinking for many years which has been precipitated by loathsome performances by our national squad on the world stage. Welcome to the New Year.
These players who represent their country should be asked to pay to play. Job done, sort the non-committed to the committed.
Until the clubs are salary capped, the game is lost. I don't give a rats a$$ about the Champions League...make the English game competitive with some sort of parity is what I long for.
