The PL has seen some impressive implosions in recent times with multiple offenders. Which teams or players do you think are the biggest bottlers ? And please don't hesistate to bring european performances into discussion if you feel the need.
This is a timely thread, Saints, and it is a question that has occupied a lot of my thinking, recently. Undoubtedly, the biggest bottlers, in our country, for many several seasons, has been Arsenal. Think about it. They now have the longest serving manager, by a long chalk, but has he won anything near the last longest serving manager (Fergie)? No. For all the years that they have played in the CL, have they come any where near winning it? No. Have they embarrassed us more times that any of us can count? Yes. Have they bottled it early, this season? Yes. Can they win the title? No. So, my vote goes to Arsenal (as a neutral), for valid reasons. I thank you, OP, for putting up such a timely thread; and I truly hope that no one will see this as a prime opportunity to wum.
I'm going to go for Southampton. Liverpool were kind enough to take Lovren out of their team and give them a load of cash. Man Utd did the same with that chunky full back. Both of the aforementioned clubs decided that this was a brilliant strategy and went back and bought more players from them for huge sums of money Leaving them by far the richest club in the world. What did they do with all that money I hear you cry? They bought Shane Long and a set of knives off the late night shopping channel.
... this is easy ... it's Burton Albion - personally I prefer it on draught but needs must ... please log in to view this image Managed by Jimmy Floyd-Bottlebank
Sorry HIAG but it is Spurs. So often they have had the means to break into the top 4 and become a force in the PL and so often they have bottled it. Selling their best players all the time doesn't help either (Modric, Bale, VDV, Berbatov). In 2012 when Chelsea won the Champions League, Spurs were 3rd, miles ahead of Arsenal who would have missed out on the CL due to Chelsea's poor league form. But they proceeded to have the biggest bottle job I had seen since Newcastle in 97. Redknapps head was turned by the vacant England job, Modric didn't want to be there, and poor Bale was trying to drag the team along by himself. And this is from someone who hates Arsenal far more than I hate Spurs.
Yeah, A case can definitely be made. Some could even say Chelsea on this seasons showing. Both North London clubs have had chances to achieve their goals (Arsenal = Win the league, Spurs = become a regular CL team) and both teams have screwed up due to bottlage! If thats a word.

Indeed. Very remiss. I'm rather surprised that Eatcustard hasn't chomped on your Utd jibe either. I think you'll have to try to be even more subtle, they seem to be catching on!..
I gotta admit, its been so depressing to be a Chelsea fan this season, I actually went back to 2012's threads and read the "Bayern Hotspur Vs Chelsea" thread on the Spurs board from when we played Bayern in the CL final. Classic thread, cheered me up no end
Recently I've read a few of CFC's old threads. He definitely didn't foresee the current Chelsea shambles (a few people predicted another Jose third season **** up). ****ing hilarious.
