So after Hotbovril's brilliant idea for a thread of fitting one our all-time greats in our current team, I got to thinking about how our current stars would fit among our all-time greats. See what I did there? Personally on talent I think Gaston, Lallana and Schneiderlin are the likeliest to be able to reach those heights, but several others could get there under the right circumstances. But the outstanding candidate has to be Rickie as one of our greatest ever goal-scorers, and this got me pondering where he actually already lies on our lists of highest goal scorer. The current top ten (according to Wikipedia, feel free to add corrections wherever) of top league goalscorers are, along with their years and total years at the club: 1 185 Mick Channon 1966â1977 & 1979â1982 14 Years 2 162 Matthew Le Tissier 1986â2002 16 Years 3 160 Terry Paine 1956â1974 18 Years 4 156 Bill Rawlings 1920â1927 7 Years 5 154 George OâBrien 1959â1966 7 Years 6 145 Derek Reeves 1954â1963 9 Years 7 145 Eric Day 1945â1957 12 Years 8 134 Ron Davies 1966â1973 7 Years 9 97 Martin Chivers 1962â1968 6 Years 10 90 Tommy Mulgrew 1954â1962 8 Years ? 82 Rickie Lambert 2009-2012 3 Years So my question is simple, where do you think he will end up on that list? Personally I think he could easily end up amongst the top but I think Channon, Le Tiss and Paine are a touch out of reach, but considering they have 48 years of Southampton service between them that is no mean feat. Obviously there are a lot of variables to do with what League we are in, if he stays with us til the end of his career, when the end of his career will be etc. etc., so feel free to add your predictions for those too! Also do you think anyone else will end up on there? Lallana is currently on 37, and if he is the one-club wonder we all hope he will be he could easily breach that list.
Good post Mikey. Would love it but unless Adam increases his scoring record can't see him getting into the top 10. Rickie could and should. A couple more season should see him pass 100.
He'll end up 9th I reckon. On another note, wouldn't it be great if his 100th league goal kept us up this season?
Even better if his 100th league goal completed his hat-trick against Liverpool on Dec 1st, and sealed a 7 match winning run that took us to the top of the Premier League!
Lambo said he hoped to finish his career with us....I so hope it works out for him. He is the greatest reason we got promotion and, as Adkins said, I love the bones of him. Whateber his final goal tally is, he has written himself into our history books.
Isn't the true measure average goals per season? On that basis (at a quick calculation) Lambert is currently No.1, Rawlings No.2 and Ron Davies No.3. Of course, Lambert's Saints career is still ongoing, and he is unlikely to maintain his goals-per-season at its present level. But he already has a big lead over most of the others even if it drops. Such stats are of limited interest though IMO, since you are not really comparing like with like in terms of Divisions, appearances, and so on.
Of course they are not the be all and end all and there is more to it, but it's a good basic stat, and I'm sure it matters to all the people up there and to Lambert himself.
Well according to my toilet paper this morning ( The Sun ) Pulis is interested in taking him to Stoke as according to the paper we are ready to cash in ...with Jones coming back the other way
Just read the piece in the Sun myself. Can't really see us "cashing in" on a 30 year old - how much can he possibly be worth? 3-4 mil vs. what he can still offer to the club? To get someone else in with his kind of scoring potential you'd have to look at spending 10 mil upwards I reckon. Jones has only scored 10 goals in 57 appearances for Stoke, not nearly good enough to offer a feasible replacement for Rickie. My conclusion - Load of old b*ll*cks!
Norwich turned down a bid of 7m from West Ham in the summer for Grant ****ing Holt! They are a similar age aren't they? Keep him and play him. He is quality. I would love him at West Ham. His goals are crucial to your chances of survival.
Not true, just wild paper talk. I don't think any club would have offered what it would have taken for us to let him go, and no club came any where near offering it (or £7M for that matter). My source? Our CEO at the recent AGM. I know Saints fans don't like comparisons between Lambert and Holt, but in this respect at least they are comparable: Lambert's goals are almost certainly worth more to Saints this season than any offer made for him.
Good info mate. It seemed to be reported in an awful lot of places that we had bid 7m plus but I suppose they all jump on the same rumour. We definitely made some kind of offer though. David Gold confirmed that on twitter. Do you have any idea how much we bid? I have to say, the price being touted around sounded like a lot of money for a player in his thirties but I would imagine Norwich see see his goals as key to survival so I can't blame them for digging in.
